Ready to dyno AGS

Ok...here goes...For all those who have been demanding AGS dyno results:

I have a friend with a new, standard pully 05 Cooper S (a custom built cat-back and wheels/tires are his only mods). He has just received his AGS and is willing to dyno his Mini AGS install with my help. The comparison will be between the stock OEM intake and the AGS. If we can find someone to borrow an Alta CAI, we can throw that into the mix. For those of you who have been sittin on the fence, here's THE opportunity to help make this happen. My friend has already paid for his AGS and isn't really interested whether it makes 1 or 100 hp.

Here's the catch...he's looking for 10 or more people who will sign up at $10/person to cover his dyno time. These people will then receive their own print out of the results to do as they wish. But to be fair to all the people who shelled out money to make this excercise happen, we need to request that the dyno not be shared publically for an agreed period of time...perhaps as short as a week or long as months...we (the paying participants) can discuss that off line. Otherwise, this won't happen as everyone will just wait for the data to be posted after a few have helped to make this happen.

We need at least 10 people. If we get twenty, the cost will of course go down to $5/person. He's not interested in profiting from this exercise.

What do you guys think?

Sorry...my inbox was full

Kaelaria, please reread the original post. If everyone who shells out the money agrees not to withold data for even one second, then that's what we do. If they want to put their data up on Ebay for $100 a pop, that's their perogative too:smile:

Are you basically saying - you want people to invest in the results so they can try to profit from them? Are you seriously thinking anyone cares enough to BUY DYNO results for an air intake? lol Good luck with that

Let's change places for a minute Kaelaria...you buy your own AGS, install it yourself, pay $100 to dyno it then post up the results for us  I like that idea better...less work for us to do.

Please rerererereread the original post? Who said anything about profits?

We haven't even got enough people together to decide how they would disiminate their data and already you're jumping down my throat Personally, I don't care what the group decide to do with their data.

just so that the masses will be happy! And SpiderX won't think I'm just a bastard for saying "go measure it yourself!" Think of it as yet another contribution to the Mini Motoring Community!

Count me in .....

I already have the AGS and think it is great, but I am willing to shell out $10 just to shut everybody up about this.

I am interested in seeing what it will do on a basically stock machine.

I think where you would see the most gains is on a heavily modded car.

So I am in for $10.

PayPal????

I completely understand the part about spreading the cost of a dyno. I just don't understand what the point would be, of not immediately releasing the info? You are the one that brought up 'selling the results on ebay if they wanted to' - implying a period of time after the dyno to make profits, before the results are public info. I just don't get it? So I have re-read it, please clarify what the mention of :

"But to be fair to all the people who shelled out money to make this excercise happen, we need to request that the dyno not be shared publically for an agreed period of time..."

- because this doesn't make any sense to me at all. Can you clarify, or do I already have it right?

a suggestion, probably too much work to implement, but the right way to do it:

dyno the stocker;
install the Alta and dyno it;
install the ags and dyno it (no special tb please;
re-install the stocker and re-dyno it.

You're a little slow today aren't you...

The idea is that if people know they're going to get the results anyway they will be more likely NOT to contribute any money. I don't think it's necessary though. In fact, I think it would actually be easier to collect money if they were going to dyno multiple intakes. Everything but the AGS would be a quick swap.

This is looking up:smile: I will PM all who have expressed commitment and do the math. Looks like it may be cheaper than $10 from the numbers here so far

Kaelaria, you're right...I don't want to argue that point. Someone will be happy to give you the number I'm sure

Jlm, that is our intended testing sequence providing that we can (and we really hope we can) find someone to loan us an Alta. It would be a shame not to include that. We'll check with our local guys first but if anyone with a spare Alta to lend us, we'd greatly appreciate that. I'm not sure why we need to rerun the stock again in the end after the first run. It would be asking a lot for me to install/remove/reinstall the AGS, don't you think? Could you elaborate?

Thanks all,
Sid

It would be a lot of work and probably not worth it.
It would however be a very good scientific test method.
If you don't get the same results for the stock intake in the
retest at the end, there would be some question about the AGS
data. If the stock intake data is the same in the retest as in the first
test, it tends to say that the comparison is accurate.

LOL...How'd you know it's the same friend:smile: He's finished the clay work and it's in the plaster mold as we speak. From the clay work that I last saw, it's beautiful. We've also determined that we could gain nearly 5/8" height in the opening. Can someone do the math and tell us what the increased area will be.

As soon as he's ready, we'll take some pictures and start a new thread

I count 13 with "yes, I'm in" in their quote (paraphrased). If we can get 7 more then it's only $5 per person:smile:

I will start PMing people who've express commitment tomorrow. Thanks guys

Still need to find an Alta to borrow...

Edit: Found a doner for the Alta. Here's the test sequence:

1-OEM intake
2-Alta intake
3-M7 AGS

One more suggestion, data log.....

If you don't have access to some good CAN-bus data logging HW/SW, there may be someone in your area who can "plug you in" so to speak for the test. What's available from the Mini is pretty extensive.. Some good stuff would be

MAP (pre-SC manifold pressure)
T-MAP (post-IC manifold temp and pressure)
Timing Advance
RPM
ECT (water temp)
Knock
O2 Sensor
Fuel trims

I'm sure there are a few more.. Plain OBD-II will be pretty slow. CAN should get all these at multi-Hz rep rates.....

Matt

ps, I'm in the SF south bay, and have stuff....

To all those that are offering to help defray the cost of doing Dyno pulls; Thank you. Yes, it is my car we will be testing. Why I've offered to do this; to give all those who are interested some real numbers. I would not be doing this for myself but it will be nice to know the results of adding AGS to a otherwise stock car. We now have an offer to use an Alta CAI to compare that intake to stock and the AGS. We will be doing pulls in the order of stock first, Alta second and AGS third. I see no real need to verify stock readings. If we did that, then we should do a second run of the other two systems as well. Frankly there just isn't enough time in one day.

I have Auterra OBD2 CAN software but don't know how to save the data. Will look into this. Thanks for the tip.

JS, I couldn't figure out why you were talking about 5-6 runs? Did I get your message wrong? Glad to hear the scoop came out of the mold:smile:

I think all the participating parties should be asked if it's OK to release the data immediately. It seems that most of the participants are owners of the AGS--and just want the numbers.

So, it is my belief (and I may be wrong) that the contributors will give the OK for immediate release of the data.

If that be the case (immediate release), I'm in.

The intent is to release the info to all who contributed immeditately. As to a open general release, everyone in NAM, anyone can do what they want with the info we send to them in a PM. Is that fair enough? Sid will be PM-ing everyone with his PayPal address. And I'll post as to when we get date to do the Dyno runs.
