The CL board has been recently plagued by fake postings. This is probably another one.

Probably a typo... put 13 instead of 31 (his Buy-it-now price on ebay)

BTW, this is hardly performance related.

Scam!!!

I think it's a scam... I've seen too many "questionables" on craigslist lately.. YES even on MINI's.... This particular seller I'm sure just stole the pix from the ebay listing..

Get This .....

I emailed the guy as I said I would, before the add disappeared and re-appeared on eBay. I asked him about specifics like what mods, weight savings of the CF body parts and other stuff. I just received this email a minute ago;
Hello,
My name is Adam Smith.
Sorry for the delay. The Mini is still for sale. The car is in perfect mechanical, physical and electrical condition. It looks great and it has great handle. This car runs awesome and is quite quick. The title is clear. I bought the car from US (Tampa, Florida) and I bring it with me home in Italy, Rome but it is to expensive for me to register here. The car is made for US, so is US standards. This is an impediment for me to sell it here because, first, we have a different standards and second will be very expensive for me to register it here. I have to pay a very expensive duty taxes. The car is still registered on US so you will not have to pay the taxes.
The car has 52625 miles. The VIN number is: WAURD68D71A003573
The price is $13000.
It will be shipped from Rome ,Italy and I will pay the shipping. All the papers + keys will come with the car. I will ask $3000 in advance. The payment will be done via secure pay which means that the third party will keep the money until you receive and inspect the car. After you will receive the car and inspected you need to pay me the rest of the money.
I will wait for your email to let me know if you are interested in knowing more details about the purchase and car.
Thank you for your understanding !
Best regards.
Adam.

Hmmmm, should I send him the $3k ...?

I don't think that's a MINI VIN number. Sounds more like a VW or AUDI number to me.

I seem to recall some discussion of a similar "scam" several months ago, probably here on NAM, involving an overseas vehicle for sale.

That's a gr8t deal.. better jump on it .. oh by the way, better ask for the stock parts in case you want to put it back to stock...

I've seen too many of these type of scams in eBay. I'm wondering if people actually fall for it..

Don't know why I'm bothering to post on this, but I guess it's too fascinating/funny to pass up.

First, though they both claim ties to Tampa, I don't think the eBay MINI is the same one offered on craigslist. They have different VIN numbers, different mileage and the eBay one is up to $19,000 and still hasn't met the reserve price. I do wonder who the "celebrity" was that owed the carbon fiber MINI on eBay. Any guesses? Uh, and 360 hp?!

Second, and not to be racist or national originist or anything, but how many guys named "Adam Smith" do you know that live in Italy and write English like that?

Third, beware any car ad that needs to point out that the car will be delivered "with the keys!"

Who knows, maybe this is just another part of MINI's "counterfeit MINI" ad campaign.

I don't know, I think $4200 for an 04 MCS with Hamann mods is a bit high. Maybe I can talk him down to $2,000.

What the heck is going on on craigslist?? How does this scam (assuming it is one) even work, you give an insane low price on a MINI, some sucker sends you money, not having any idea who you are, and you just scram with the money? Why even bother to use MINIs, why not just offer $50,000 in diamonds for $1,000?

This is a SCAM people, no doubt...there are a few groups of Italians in London offering the same lame-a$$ story about high taxes, not feasible to import the car/fashion products whatever back to Italy blah blah blah. I can gurantee that anyone who gives this cowboy their money will most likely never see it again

You have been warned.
