Desiding whether or not to get alta intake

i am very torn about getting the alta intake because i am worried about my warrenty and i also read somewhere that it is not emissions legal. i live in NY i dont know if that makes a difference. But i am wondering what other think about this. should i do it and how easy is it to install as i am fairly handy but do not have the most patience.

I cant imagine an intake wouldnt be emissions legal, as its only helping you burn fuel more efficiently...and as for the warranty...a new antenna voids your warranty!

laxpimp6903,

Alta intake?
Sure, get it. Install it yourself.
Too loud? Or not working out (for legal reasons-seems doubtful) then keep your stock parts and reinstall them and sell the alta intake.

Your warranty is fine with or without the Alta intake. Just don't drive into water up to your chest and suck water into your intake. Your MINI won't be happy.

Enjoy the screaming intake noise on hard acceleration. It may drown out your exhaust. Maybe your stereo too.

The ALTA (actually all CAI's on the market) maintain the use of stock style emissions plumbing. No worries regarding emissions.

As for warranty, technically nothing voids the warranty until something breaks, and that part caused the failure. Take a read through the Magnuson-Moss Act thread

The ALTA CAI is still the best intake on the market, both quality and performance-wise. It's a great looking addition to your under-bonnet aesthetics, and the added "music" is a definte plus.

Cheers,
Ryan

laxpimp6903,
I agree with Ryephile that the Alta CAI, as well as any other CAI on the market, uses your stock emissions plumbing. The Alta has said to be by far the best CAI out there today...performance and style! I would go ahead and get it, because I am sure you wont be let down!

Cold Air Intake

I also have considered a CAI for a while. I participate in one Solo II (parking lot with pylons) event per month, durring the summer.

If you want to participate in (even one) Solo II event you will need to reinstall the stock air intake, or run with cars that have many more modifications.

If you are REALLY worried about it, find a dealer that does mods. I.E. Main Line MINI here in Philadelphia works with Helix, DC Metro MINIS does all sorts of mods, etc. I'm sure one of the dealerships in NY is mod-friendly. If they are PREFORMING the mods, they know that an intake wouldn't cause (most if any) warrantee issues.

AFAIK, Any device that alters combustion can be held accountable for emissions. Therefor an intake COULD be held responsible if it wasn't certified. That said, I wouldnt worry about it.

I was a little worried about getting it to, but there does seem to be better throttle response. The noise from it takes some getting used to but you'll probably like it. If not just put the stock intake back in.

...and on that note - a poor tank of gas will also have an effect on your emissions.

You know that high pitch whine your Cooper S makes when you mash the gas pedal and drive to redline. Imagine that whine amplified a couple times and then add in some cool sucking noises when hammering through the gears. In normal day to day driving and shifting the car doesn't sound much different. It's the best of both worlds. However, if you've ever had a previous non-forced-induction car with a CAI installed, this DOES NOT sound like it. There are lots of Miatas, Civics, Acuras, etc., out there with intakes on them and they make a deep growl when accelerating. It's MUCH different with the Mini as what ends up getting louder is the sound of the supercharger winding up.

Hope that helps,
Macman.

I'm also considering buying the Alta or the Dinan CAI. I have yet to hear either CAI.

From what I understand, the Dinan sounds similar to the stock unit until approximately 4000 rpm and the it sounds very nice. The Dinan looks similar to the stock unit. The Alta seems to be the best CAI out there in regard to performance and build quality. (Check out Webb Motorsports website)

Just my two cents worth

Have you considered a second mortgage?

JCW parts are grossly overpriced in my opinion.

Last I checked, gas wasnt a modification or a device.

We'll mark you down as a "yes", then.

That's one satisfied customer.

Cheers,

The JCW airbox itself is competitively priced... it's the air filters that are insane... any PAPER element air filter that is over $100 to replace is ridiculous.

The Alta Intake is a very nice intake... do it!

the ONLY negative feed back I can offer involves the use of the Alta CAI and the hood scoops sold by Benfer performance.Since the CAI removes a wall separating the area directly below the hood cowl on the drivers side, the scoops introduced snow, and rain directly into my intake ,and I wound up with a chunk of ice in my throttle body.came real close to frying the engine.Scoops out the same day.end of problem.
