Transmission bolt 5 sided interference with differential
Hi, I am fitting a LSD in my 2011 Mini Cooper s with the Getrag manual transmission an there is a bolt right above the fill plug that slightly interferes with the LSD. I'd like to know what its purpose is. It seems to be made out of SST and requires a 5 SIDED key, not a HEX. I don't think it's just a plug. It seems to extend in the casing to a precise depth, close to the differential gear. I am wondering if it's there just in case that the bearings get damaged and if the diff is wobbly it won't catastrophically fail right away, the gear jamming against the casing.?Anyways, I don't see that in the previous years or after. Also where can you purchase the required tool, I know I could grind one worse come to worse. Thanks
I used the Mfactory. Interestingn thay you say this because I also had an interference with the casing. I had to grind some material. This bolt is only on certain years. If your car has it, there will be interference with the gear on the diff. Someone else on a FB group had this problem and he used a Quaife.
With at least those 2 diffs, the gear might sit slightly closer. I took a pic where you can see the mounting surface height of the gear on the original (left), vs the new LSD (right).
If your transmission doesn't have that bolt, you won't have that problem.
To be honest, I can’t remember if it was there or not. My car was an early 2012 model, so not sure if there was a cutoff date or not. I do know the diff dropped right in, and I didn’t have any issues.
Inreresting to know that there are some slight differences. Cheers

I just took the grinder to it. Tomorrow I hope to have the time to install eveyrthing back in the transmission and whenever it will be warmer outside I can install it back in the car. Be careful not to damage any inside parts. You won't find them anymore. For example I dropped the roller bearing that has a plastic cage and it craked. You cannot find that bearing. You need to buy the whole set which is aboit 3-400 dollars

I have a gearbox with the same case and 5 sided bolt that I’ll be installing an LSD in.
Here are some pictures for anyone else cursed with this version of the GS6-53BG/DG. It’s an early ‘11 production date I’m installing an Mfactory LSD in. Had to grind that 5 sided bolt and part of the case, one pic has some marking of where the LSD interferes with the case (I had already removed some material before pic was taken). Be careful not to remove too much material, it could be quite thin in that area and the clutch assembly is on the other side.

Nice job, I had to also grind the casing. I hope I did not remove too much until I realized that the bolt was interfering. Hopefully there is not too much stress in that area. I am waiting on the clutch to be able to put it back together.
