Swapping 'S' motor into Cooper chassis

I searched and couldn't find anything. I also asked a Mini tech and he said it sould bolt right up. Is this true? I know that I would probably need an ECU, wiring harness, 6-speed and motor of course. What do you guys think?

I think you should just sell your Cooper and buy an S, it'll come out cheaper than swapping.

Do you have a crashed S or Cooper? That would be the only way I would think it would make any sense from a cost standpoint. Otherwise, why?

Here are some things you also need to consider:

- The sport + suspension included on the S
- The different bonnet to fit the S intercooler
- The different wiring harness you mentioned
- The sport seats included on the S

Hope that helps...

What about the 6-speed tranny? I thought they (MINI) Said the 5-speed wasn't strong enough to handle the extra power.

He already mentioned that, so I assumed he had the entire drivetrain.

Looks like he just realized he needs the hood too...

This kind of stuff rarely ever makes sense economically. The few exceptions being if you happen to come across a cheap hydrolocked Cooper after your S gets totalled or something. Even then, the biggest factor is labor. If he can do it himself then more power to him, but it's going to get prohibitively expensive if a shop's going to do all the work.

Regardless, I wish you luck UKSUV

Not really sure why you would want to swap the entire "S" engine and drivetrain into a base Cooper but I would see some sense into using the "S" engine block and head to build a really nice normally aspirated engine. I guess that's what they are using on the MINIUSA.COM drag car.

Don't forget that the S also has the battery relocated to the boot. You'd probably need to move the battery to have a place to put the air cleaner, unless you run a HAI...

I've done/helped with engine and tranny swaps on other cars similar to the situation you're asking about....if you do it, and are planning on doing it yourself, then be prepared because it is a pain in the you know what....if you're going to have a shop do it, I would say forget about it...cost prohibitive is not a big enough word (kind of like a cam install issue, it's much better to have someone help, and learn while you help and watch, rather than pay a shop to do it...those installs alone are pricey as hell in themselves, no imagine an entire engine/tranny swap)....either way, good luck if you decide to do it...you'll get a tremendous feeling of pride doing it yourself or with some buddies...it can be a good time as well

GoMINI featured a guy who had a ONE (fire damaged) and put a Cooper S engine in it. Tranny, too. So maybe it is in the realm of theoretical feasibility.

I was thinking of just swapping the 'S' motor and tranny into my '03 Cooper because of the high mileage racking up. Our motors are not big at all. Throwing the battery in the boot is easy. Getting the hood is easy. It's an idea at most right now. I want the power increase and might just go with a turbo upgrade if one ever comes out.

I may have a donor motor, trans, comp, etc. S motor low miles just over 10000. Thinking of an engine swap myself. The motor has a 15% pulley, intake, ecu, wires, and exhaust. It runs great but a neon stomped my MINI and unless I want to spend 10000 $ I wont be able to keep up. So I was thinking if I could sell my motor trans etc and apply the $ too a bent up firebird or other donor type sports car. I can do most of the fab work myself so not much $ there. Buy a few performance parts and have one kick a$Z MINI. In a straight line of course. Picture a MINI with a big blower stuck out the hood and big slicks in back.

I dont know if your just tring to make a sleeper or what? but you should just buy an "S" and debadge it, rip off the spoiler, swap hoods etc........

Would be way easier and get all the goodies of a "S"
