magnaflow vs borla vs dinan

ok iv narrowed my exhaust choices down to magnaflow - borla sport - or dinan for my 04 MCS and i need to know which has a better NON RICEY sound and adds some good power - i want it to scream at high rpms and have a good smooth idle. which one should i take and why. thanks

If you want to look up my video in the member galleries, it's under my user name...Brother. You can hear what my car sounds like at 129 mph.
I have the Quicksilver Super Sports exhaust, not to be confused with the Sports exhaust that Quicksilver first offered. It is hard to find, I ordered the muffler from England, and it is not the cheapest but, I like it
BTW, I have a 17% pulley and a CAI but thats it for engine mods

Magnaflow

I've had the FLow for a couple yrs now...still love it...never had the drone which has been reported and supposedly makes the most power...I'm not so sure on the last comment, but it sure sounds that way.

i have a magnaflow video but the galleries won't let me post...send my your e mail and i will send it to any and all...I do love the MaGnAfLoW

I have the "Flow" and love it. Some minor drone but it just makes me smile.

When you come by in a "Flow", you'll turn heads .

magnaflow is loud, but it is not ricey at all... i do not think i've ever heard of ANY exhaust for the S being any bit ricey.. all make a beautiful combination of low end tone with a high end pitch when you step on it... think the loud scale goes from supersprint, magnaflow, borla sport, uuc, and then a mess of other exhaust, most of which are mid loud... i think in this class is alta, and scorpion, along with probably miltek depends on how one defines quiet... jcw, borla street defenitely are quiet systems

i have a scorpion... LOVES it... sometimes when it starts popping when you lift, it sounds like a mis-firing system under the hood! there's never been any hp figures though... but i dont think exhaust'd make THAT much of a difference i went this direction

under my general impression.. any name brand like dinan is probably too much money for what you get

Have you checked out Helix? I have their catback and really like the power boost as well as the mellow sound.

I get to enjoy the Magnaflow every day. I really enjoy the sound of it. At times, I just turn off the stereo and listen to the car. Really does make a huge difference with the overall experience of driving my MINI.

Go to some gatherings. Read some of the other threads. If you search long enough, you'll find clips of some of the exhausts. Better yet, ask others to send you a CD with video files or an actual tape. Before I ordered my system, a gentleman kindly shared a video of his car with the Magnaflow.

I don't think you will be disappointed with any of the systems you listed. Just jump in and start enjoying.

It really depends on what you want from the car.

If you can deal with the sound - I like the Magnaflow. You have introduced an issue that no one else has mentioned though - you have an '04. That narrows your choices without a bit of fabrication to make an ealry car system work for you. Magnaflow doesn't currently make an '04 system - the hangers are oriected differently. Borla and Milltek do.

Here's where I would head - The Borla Sport is a nice system, but it does come as a veritable jigsaw puzzle. It is louder than the Milltek, so if you want it to scream, that may be the way to go.

Borla Sport

If you want the best system for your car, go with the Milltek. It doesn't "scream" as loud as the Magnaflow or the Borla Sport, but it does have a very nice, non-"ricey", throaty tone.

Milltek

If you are capable of some minor modifications, the Magnaflow would be a great choice to get the sound you want, and the fit is better than the Borla. The tips are subjective, but I like the 'flow trumpet tips.

Magnaflow

You can see a bit of a comparison over on the Catalog Section of www.webbmotorsports.com.

Hope that helps!
Randy

You too eh!? That Sweeeeet sound is often better than whatever is on the radio. Making it sing as one goes through each gear or the wonderful burbble as you gear down for a stop. Mmmmmmm.

Definately one of the best MINI aftermarket products.

The only other combinations I thought sounded decent:

Borla Race - must be with Milltek headder - loud
Supersprint - full system with header - loud, higher pitch, almost Ferrari like
Milltek catback + header - a little on the tin side for my taste, but good once you get going and quiet on the hwy.

I have the Milltek header and catback. Easy install. The catback took a little less than an hour.

It is louder than I expected (maybe due to having header and catback)- but that's a good thing. Very throaty, will burble and pop when you lay off the throttle.

Very subtle volume and note changes when cruising, but quite noticeable under throttle. Have taken it for two runs through the hills since I bolted it on and have left the radio off.

Hell. I drive half the time with the back seats folded down so I can hear it with an even better tone.
BTW. I love the trumpets. The Magnaflow cannot be confused with any other exhaust. From the sound to the looks.

I have a Magnaflow on my '03 MCS... 5000 miles. Great throaty sound, not too loud, not ricey at all. It gets a little boomy/droney on long steady 80 mph highway trips, so I'm taking it off... I'd take $250 picked up in Charlotte, NC if you want it, or I can see about shipping.

This is a great thread! I have been lusting after a Borla but it looks like Magnaflow may be the ticket. Coming from owning a classic Mini, I like a little noise so I am also considering the Alta intake.

See my Signature. The Magna Flow Rules. Great sound/great tips and what little you see of the stainless steel mufflers looks very classy--matches my exterior chrome.

I've had the Borla Race for over a year now. Couldn't be happier. I've never liked the tips on the Magnaflow. Milltek tips aren't as nice as the Borla in my opinion but I do like the fact that you can get a header from the same manufacturer. I think all the systems are very comparable. Just pick the one that you like the best.

Hi Randy,

the Konis, camber kit and Hsport springs went in today and we definately have a new ride, thank you. I rode in Joseph's (RSpeed) car and I love the tone of his exhaust. The Borla street I have is a little tame for my taste. I'm thinking maybe Miltek because I want ot add the header and I assume that match is good. Your comments?

Rusted Magnaflow

Hi, I am not ready to mod the exhaust on my 05 MCS yet because I still want to drive the stock for some time, but I have been looking into it. I also think magnaflow is a good one. However, I saw this aution of a used maganaflow up at Ebay, claimed to be used for only 1200 miles, but it seems quite rusty already.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

Is it supposed to be stainless steel made?

I think if you are planning on doing the Milltek header, the Milltek cat-back is a great way to go for a simple reason, it is 2 1/2" at the flange, which is identical to the header.

In my opinion, that would be a better way to go than the throttle body (I know we just talked about that).

The Magnaflow is stainless, but they (all of the exhausts) will rust after a while if they are exposed to salt and such. It usually polishes right up - if you are willing to get under the car and remove and reinstall it!

Hope that helps!
Randy
