OK, I hate to do a post for something that I know is posted somewhere already. But I can seem to find this specific information.

Anyway, my turbo doesn't sound too happy. I want to get it swapped out and want to know all my options. I have already looked at a lot of aftermarket upgrades and hybrid turbo options. But I think I am going to go for a more cost effective option now, buy the supporting mods first, then introduce a better turbo into the mix.

I am eyeing up a turbo and from what I have seen the Turbo's sold for JCW and S's list all model years from 07-13 (or 15-16 depending on application)

But I was wondering if there would be any concerns going with an N14 Turbo on an N18 engine. Are there any reasons I shouldn't get the turbo from the N14s?

As far as I have read otherwise, I am good to go with without issue on swapping in a JCW turbo, and even recommended if I need to replace it anyway.

I am also wondering in the case of that swap, would there be anything different in the parts I order, such as oil feed lines and gasket kits?

And why not for good measure ask another question, more of a point of recommendation, I figured if I was getting a used one, I should do a rebuild kit on it. Anyone do their own rebuild? I have watched a few videos on rebuilds and they don't seem to complicated. I do consider myself competent when it comes to mechanical work, Turbo's are just something I haven't handled myself before and there is that slight fear of the unknown. Something spooling at 20k+ just seems like something small could make it go horribly wrong. Is there a recommended interval that a rebuild kit should be installed?

As far as I know all the turbos are the same. When you purchase turbos like my E45R, they say for 2007 and up models.

 

Too bad... I just sold my low mileage turbo from my 2013 N18 S for $400 after swapping to the N18 JCW version.

Try and find a low mileage turbo and you should not have worry about a rebuild. I would leave rebuilds to the experienced specialist anyway.

All the turbos should just bolt on. There may be minor updated internal differences but you should not be able to tell.

As far as consumables. Those too should be the same, I ordered all my from ECS Tuning after getting part numbers from www.realoem.com. Don't forget the copper crush gaskets for the turbo coolant line banjo bolts, you need 4. Get the upgraded oil feed line from Detroit Tuned.

If you do go with the JCW version you may need to get the larger diameter JCW air inlet. Some people have modified their original inlet pipe with some luck.

The turbos can be swapped around with out issues. Please make sure to use new gaskets and a new oil feed line (they only liked to be used once)

I think I saw this a couple days ago and didn't realize it was my own post from 3 years ago.

For a definitive answer, yes I did exactly as the title states. The only differences are the turbo intake opening is slightly larger, but a tiny bit of lube will allow the intake tube to easily slide right on and there is one mounting screw that isn't used for the top coolant line, there is a blank space where it would go, but no hole, it's not entirely needed as it is a ridged line. EDIT(I might be wrong about this part, there may be a difference between the S and JCW parts for the N14 turbos. For some reason I recall not seeing it, but as I look there is clearly a threaded hole there on the N14 JCW turbo)

There are gasket kits out there and some upgrades for the oil intake line for the turbo, If you have any questions about the work, let me know, as I have just done this a second time and there are some lessons I had to learn twice.

Past week i have made turbo swap on a MINI workshop specialist and he has made the work flawlessy!
I have changee the oil feed, and some other minor things.. and the day after that, i have done an Stage 2 getting near to 260cv and 380nm of torque.

Now i can hear the new turbo breathing! Really loving it!

Same JCW turbo both N14 and N18??

 

There are technically a few different part numbers, but they are all physically interchangeable.
