Drivetrain Looking at an R53, please help a noob, please?!
Looking at an R53, please help a noob, please?!
alright, so i am not thatr big of a noob when it comes to cars. i built my first engine when i was 15 ...yes, actually built, not bolt stuff to a stock one haha.
i am having a hard time ascertaining the info i am looking for and i am really hoping in the most humble way someone will help me and answer some beatto death questions i can find with searches.
when putting an underdrive/reduction pulley on the supercharger does the ECU automatically retune for more air? is there a way to tune them? all i have found was this...
http://www.revolutionmini.com/?page_...3&product_id=3
and it doesn't tell me anything about it. i'm no stranger to tuning myself. i have tuned a big turbo 951/944 Turbo, Corrado VR6 Turbos, Integra GSR B17A1 Turbo, Civic FG2 with bolt ons, Mazdaspeed 3 with bolt ons, ect...
if it does auto recalibrate for more air is there a way to tune it the traditional way? if so, at what point does it make logical sense to get it tuned?
sorry but this ECU system seems like a mystery in this car haha. it's like when i was working on an e46 M3, seems like there's very little info out there. ended up doing the SMG pump and winging it haha!
oh lastly, i guess still ECU related ...is there a programmer that lets you adjust fuel levels on the user end? example, Hondata lets you adjust a bunch of parameters where a programmer for a Ford Mustang doesn't let you do anything and you end up having to take it to a shop that has the software to tune
ultimately looking for 200-225whp if i do go ahead and trade my card for the Mini R53 offered to me.
if there's a thread explaining all this already please feel free to link, i will read until my heart is content and maybe check back for some details. thanks everyone so much that stuck with me here and those who can answer! thanks again!

Talk to Jan at Revolution MINI Works to see what's involved in reaching this goal.
Simply putting a reduced supercharger pulley on a stock R53 won't require a retune. 15% is super safe, and 17% is fine if you're not tracking the car or spending tons of time at the redline. After installing the pulley, colder plugs, and proper belt you can simply reset the ECU, but you don't have to retune for just that. Search the forums for the thread on resetting the ECU, it's easy to find.
As for HP, you can get close to 220WHP with what I have in my sig. For more you'll have to get a BVH. Anything more than a CAI, pulley, and exhaust and you'll wanna get your car tuned. Like Miniac said, talk to Jan when you get to that point.

Check out this thread on NAM here. It has some good information.

thanks for all of the responses! i have done a lot of searching, i kind of know what it's going to take, i am just hung up on ECU.
this is going to be a weird question i guess... does it get hard reflashed like a MK4 or newer VW, can if be flashed with a programmer like a Ford, Subaru, Mazda ...or can the ECU be reprogrammed to be reflashed like a Honda with Hondata? anyone have any insight on that?
