Pulley: Alta Vs. Helix

Read about how the 19% produces too much heat and could cause too much extended wear for daily driving. Therefore i have decided on either a 15% or a 17% pulley. Now just have to decide which brand.

Been reading up on the forums and still haven´t found any real opinions of which is better and why. I keep reading that their both good and whichever you go with you can´t go wrong. So because they are both good, I´m just gonna ask, what do you have on your MINI, Alta or Helix Pulley. Just to see what most of you have...

Any input is appreciated.

I think you may have been misinformed or read into something incorrectly. The 19% has not proven any worse for wear than the 15%. The only issue of concern is when the 19% is used for track purposes. That is where the belt becomes an issue (heat deteriorating/destroying the belt). Daily driving is the ideal situation for the 19%. The torque is wonderful.

I see, thank you for correcting me. So then your saying i could use a 19% pulley safely for street use and not have to worry about my MINI exploding , lol. Well then, i guess i would stay with the 19% as i had originally planned before reading info. The extra torque must be wonderful...

I just got the ALTA 15% with the ALTA CAI last Saturday. It's awesome. I expected more lowend torque (under 3K). above 4K, the car is a beast and the the supercharger whine from the CAI is just frightening. I went with the 15% because it seem like the logical first step.

The 19% has to be more risky, right? I'm not a big fan of being on the bleeding edge with a car that has a note on it & is under some sembelance of a warranty.

Yeah i figured the 19% would be more risky, but then theres alot of MINI enthusiasts on this forum and over on M2 that have had 19% pulleys for quite some time and no trouble at all...And i´m planning on getting the Alta Intake w/ housing, alta air diverter w/ spray, and a custom full exhaust.. so i don´t think i should have a problem with a 19%.

I guess because i´m going Alta with alot of my other future mods i guess it would be logical to have the Alta pulley..

Both pulleys are high quality. Either will last look good doing it. Agreed on the 19% being risky for track-use, mostly due to belt issues.

Enjoy,
Ryan

Installed the Helix 17% a couple of weeks ago and I can tell you that it is of very high quality. The choice between 17% and 19% depends on a lot of variables such as climate, driving style, and intercooling equipment. I live in Hong Kong where the summers are hot(30C+ during the day), do a lot of driving in the 4000-6500 rpm range, and still have the stock IC, hence the 17%. I do have their 19% as well, which I may try after I receive the GRS IC next week, or wait until the winter months. A few MINIs in Taiwan using the 19% have seen oil temp of 140C+ during prolonged high speed driving, requiring oil cooler installation.

Hope this info helps.

I live in South Florida where the summers can get pretty hot but nothing over mid 90´s. Would the heat be an issue with a 19% pulley? I would like the extra power of the 19% but not if it will cost me...

Winter Months in Hong Kong is like our cold Summer in Boston! (Only one 90+F day this year)
LOL.

HK's humid weather is tough on most cars, though I distintly remember seeing a few older saabs and M5's roaming around the twisties by Repulse bay

What's the GRS IC you're talking about?

the way i see it is, if you have any worries just go with the 15%. if you go 19% you might be constantly asking yourself, " is this okay, I hope so"

I have 15% and I autocross and it's great. And I have no worries whatsoever because I know it's safe.

But to each its own.
