Bone stock r56, turbo blew, upgrading my turbo and...?

I'm eyeing the JMTC GT Dominator 47mm K04 turbo upgrade (http://www.jmturbocoopers.com/GT-Dom...urbo-GT28.html) and I'm trying to pick up a used brand name intercooler.

What other mods are mandatory? Intake, a tune

Suggested? Blow off valve, down pipe, oil catch can, exhaust?

2007 r56 with 168k. Already did a compression test and all cylinders were at ~130. It's had the timing chain done at 120k, Detroit tuned turbo line, and water pump.

I am not sure about other brand tunes but with Manic .. Any turbo swapped car is stage 3 automatically and required downpipe (catless or high flow cat) , Upgraded intercooler, and intake of some sort. A drop in panel counts as intake.

That turbo is designed to run higher boost and higher boost requires meth injection or race fuel.. sometimes both. If you leave it set to pump gas no meth you'll be lucky to get a 21psi tune. Which is fine but you will have lag compared to a smaller JCW or JM40.

If you do run meth and high boost who knows how long those pistons will hang on....

It is a slippery slope when adding power and components should picked based on your end goals. If you plan on "going big" then get a big turbo and go for it. Lots of information and build threads floating around so research and find a goal of where you want to be power wise.

kudos for asking first. We get lots of customers who just order stuff and have to ask them later why'd you buy that? Lots of people pull off perfectly good parts because they don't play nice with other parts or the goal they are shooting for.

Alright, I'm fine with picking up a intercooler, downpipe and an intake.
Is there a best of breed for each of those ($/HP/value)? I'd like to pick up used parts, if I can.

I really wasn't looking at tearing into the engine/pistons right now, maybe later.

I'm leaning towards finding the "most stable/proven" build. I just figured I should buy the biggest turbo but if not which one should I be looking into? I'm ok with a little lag to have some future upgrade potential.

I have my car in service mode now so I'd like to get everything done that needs done while I'm in there now.

I have a JMTC E45R
I was afraid I would have a lot of lag with the GT Dominator.

Yeah, after talking it through with a friend I'm now leaning towards a med-large turbo.

@johntotah94. Do you have some suggestions on the best intercooler, downpipe and cold air intake?

I personally have a helix intercooler, Evolve catless down pipe, and AEM Intake.

I like the Wagner Intercooler,
Downpipe you can go with MarioKart. He makes some.
Intake I like the AEM, DDMWorks Race, or the Prototype-R intake that another member's company is making.

Still need suggestions on which turbo to get that will work fine on stock internals.

Still having some sticker shock on the price of mod parts. Those down pipes are WAY over priced! I'm probably going to pick up an ebay intercooler if I can't find a used one soon. I'm just going to fabricate the Cold Air Intake with a K&N cone filter.

If your not wanting to do internals, or meth. I would suggest the jcw turbo!

How jacked is your turbo? Is it repairable? If so, G-Pop Shop can repair/upgrade at a fraction of the price of a new turbo.

I know that I wanted to go larger than the jcw turbo. I'm trying to get to ~250 hp or more with the bolt-ons and a tune. I don't know exactly how jacked the turbo is. I know that it's not making any boost at all.

It looks like the Borg Warner K03 was the stock turbo on the r56. Do you know how far out I can re-build up a turbo if I re-used the existing K03 housing?

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...charger-3.html post 60 or so. Not sure how far you can go with the stock turbo.
Perhaps your diverter valve diaphram is torn and that's why it's not holding any boost.

Send to gpopshop and they can rebuild and even do better internals.

I gave gpopshop a call and I'll talk with Jerry in the morning. Their price is very reasonable. Now to see how well they can build them.

I'd like to know what details you end up going with, mainly what size wheel and how you came to that decision. I'm about to contact G-Pop as well but figure I'll see what you come up with first. I don't have a clue what to go with or even what the options are.

Here are some more updates on my progress.

Things that I’m still shopping for

Downpipe - a used downpipe or an affordable option. Anyone know of a generic solid stainless steel option?

Things that I’ve purchased

Turbo - I’m having gpop shop rebuild my turbo. I’m still waiting to get some data sheets but it seems like people have had great success with them. According to Jerry this should be one step above the stock JCW turbo.
KKK K03/04 Hybrid Turbo
http://gpopshop.com/products-page/kkk-turbos/

Intake - A used JCW kit air intake from this forum, like so.
http://www.waymotorworks.com/jcw-int...6-r55-r57.html

Intercooler - I’ve picked up generic FMIC from ebay based on what http://www.ebay.com/itm/201037311241?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Things that I’m going to purchase
Diverter valve spring - Upgrading the blow-off-valve-spring ($15 plus shipping)
http://altaperformance.com/i-1400716...bo-engine.html

Installing WMW Diverter/Blow Off Valve
http://www.waymotorworks.com/wmw-per...off-valve.html

Here is how to install the Diverter/Blow Off Valve
http://www.*********************/for...off-valve.html

Activities to be done
Polish up my exhaust manifold – I’m still trying ot find which one I should buy.

“Get an OEM exhaust manifold gasket, which will be bigger than the head ports. Use any bolts to align the gasket to the header flange. Then get a red marker and color the excess flange face between the gasket and port. Very important grind down the flange as much as possible without grinding the primary tube welds. Take your time and do it evenly, about an hours time or less, though it'd take me less than 20 minutes because I've done it many times.” As read elsewhere on the forum

Do you want a Cat. in the downpipe? If not, check out WMW for that. I have mine ceramic coated.

If you're going to get the WMW diverter valve, skip the ALTA spring. As far as I know, the WMW DV already has a uprated spring.

And again WMW sells the uprated exhaust manifold.

Lastly be sure to have a tune lined up once you have these installed. While you don't need a tune with these bolt-ons, you'll wan't a tune to reap the most benefits. Of course you may have already had that part figured out.
