Drivetrain 135i Brembos (Same as Mini GP2s) upgrade thread. Dump info in here!
Hi Guys,
I've got a GP2 with oem calipers. When my last set of stock front pads went, I noticed the bottom of the pads were much more worn than the top. Mini Orlando told me the lower pistons were sticking and they ended up replacing the calipers completely, under factory warranty. This was back in Jan. Fast forward a few months, I just finished a weekend at Sebring last weekend and I noticed a slight metal on metal sound from the front passenger side. When I got home and pulled the wheels, I found the pads were worn down to backing plate on the underside portion. Meanwhile, the top portion probably had a good quarter inch of material or so so intact. The brake wear sensor was nowhere near touching. All the dust boots of course are destroyed. Have any of you had this uneven pad wear issue? I read in the thread about the smaller piston being the lead... Could the calipers being installed incorrectly, upside down cause this much uneven wear? It seems unlikely that two sets of calipers would have been installed incorrectly... I'll also mention, I've just been running oem pads for both street and track use. The car came to me with a maintenance package that included all pad, rotor and fluid replacement through 2020. No matter how fast I go through them, Mini has been taking care of it at no cost to me. regardless, once I've sorted this issue with the pistons, I'm going to start running some track specific pads and some Motul 600. This is just nuts.
Also, the links earlier in the thread for replacement aluminum pistons are no longer working. Has anyone found a really good source for replacement stainless steel pistons that you've been happy with? Links? I've found these so far:
https://www.racingbrake.com/Save-10-...p/bb-61bsp.htm
https://www.racingbrake.com/Piston-K...W-p/bb-61p.htm
Also, the Mfg part # for Stoptech E82 135i SS piston upgrade is: ST-135-UPGRADE
ECS has them here: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-stoptech...t-135-upgrade/
Turner has them as well: https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-3...-135i/?pdk=AQI
Has anyone run either of these upgrades?

Hi. Brand new forum member here but not new to car forums. Have a lot of time at the bimmerpost forums (you can check my rep on the link below). Reason I am posting is I have a complete set of 135i brembos for sale which already have the Racing Brakes SS piston upgrade. Only reason I am selling is that I upgraded to Stoptechs. Thread here: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1567318
Anyway, I hope my posting here is not viewed negatively but I stumbled across it googling what cars can be upgraded with the 135i brembos and figured someone here might be interested. Thx.
Best,
Andy

What pads, stock OEM pads on the front do squeal a little when hot. But on the aftermarket ones you should be fine.

thanks for the reply I purchased the lines and rotors GP2 from ECS the pads from rock auto. The noise at braking sounds like pads loose any suggestions thanks
Yep, thanks for the orders.
If its a squeal its a stock pad, if its a back and forth thing and the pad sounds like a clunk it could be the pad not set into the caliper and the retaining clip not set. Has those PIN also. Other then that check to make sure the caliper bracket is not loose or anything. See install pics above on my R58JCW and make sure the clip is there. Also what pads? Brand?

Welcome.
Which bracket? The shims on their own? Or that spring clip?

Has anyone rebuilt their GP2 / 135i front caliper pistons with RacingBrake.com's stainless steel kit? I've now gone through two sets of OEM pistons. I've also looked at stoptech's option.. They're aluminum though. The price on RacingBrake's kit is pretty steep. But, I'm thinking of going for SS and being done with this. I'm just curious if anyone has gone this route and what their experience has been.
Just wanted to throw this up here... New product being sold by ECS:
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-reboot-e...5xr56cr-1~rbt/
Seems like you could put together a lower priced GP2 brake setup with these.

I know this is an old thread but I have 2 questions on this:
1. Can you simply swap the bleeder valve with the plug at the other end so that the bleeder is at the top?
2. Using the existing bmw bracket - is the offset correct for the rotor to sit in the middle of the caliper?

1. Yes. Mine have two bleeder screws top and bottom. Easy peasy.
2. You cannot use the BMW bracket. The offset is not correct for use with GP2 rotors. You have three options: Either shim the rotor 3mm away from the hub, machine the BMW bracket to center to caliper on the rotor, or get the Reboot Engineering caliper brackets. I choose to get the Reboot brackets.
