N18 vs. B48

Hey guys,

Was able to get a new MINI S B48 motor on the dyno for baseline pull. The new 2L motor. Thought it made an interesting comparison to the N18 in stock form. Very similar power.

The B48 runs around 8-9psi stock... but is easily tuned up to 11-13psi. I have not explored levels beyond that but I expect power to fall in the 250whp range at 13psi. Unfortunately wasn't able to get tuned runs on the B48 but it's responding very well. Will be a worth adversary for the N18.

Just throw a 320i tune onto it, instant 240hp.

I can't imagine what fun the F56 JCW will be. Only interested in that hardtop.

The JCW F56 looks a lot better than the standard F56 S!

I still can't see myself getting one. Maybe engine swap would be awesome.

I'd bet $$ that the stock gen3 tune was made specifically to match the gen2 closely....gives them a chance to sell n18 cars from the plants with folks test driving them saying...hmm...pretty similar...and I'd bet the newer motor will get a 10 HP bump when they do a refresh....most seem automakers seem to do this as a model ages to give extra value to a design as it ages and they gain confidence in a motor....
Good to hear folks are already playing with the new motor....
Maybe there is hope!! Now if they could just do something about that nose....

Amen to that brother. The idea of a 2.0 liter fully built and designed by BMW caused me to get a warm and fuzzy all over till I saw the car. Power potential should be outstanding but suffering Saints who let the saboteur on the body design team and why didn't anybody stop him.

I don't see the value in putting a larger engine in that basically has the same power in a bigger , heavier car ?

Are you taking 250hp with just a tune or total potential with parts upgrade?

Just tuning and 93 octane pump fuel. It's speculation at this point but I think we'll wind up in the ball park.

I did some 1/4 mile testing on a private track and stock for stock it seems to be a couple MPH slower than the N18 in the 1/4 mile. Must weigh more.

Woohoo! Glad to see that someone's started already. Thanks for posting for us!

+1

Gotta say I'm not impressed. I thought the 2nd gen tuners are able to pull around 250 from a 1.6 (roughly 156 hp/L for argument sake and without drivetrain losses calculated in).

I was really hoping that we'd be seeing this new 2L in the 300hp range

(and it still needs a physical damn dipstick)

Getting 250whp out of a normal 1.6L S is very difficult and takes a lot of others mods to do that.
The F56 will be able to do 250 WHP on just a tune, add other mods and 300whp could be possible. Remember 250hp at the crank is much different than 250 at the wheels.

MarioKart you must be already running 270hp at the crank, but then again you have the much more efficient and powerful N18 produced. I believe that an N18 version of a 2.0 liter would have been better than what BMW has to offer now with the F56.
