Where to start with a 2013 Clubman S?
Hey all, been reading a lot of the threads here and I can't seem to find anything specific for a 2013 Clubman S. So I'm just looking for some advice on where to start? I have a 2013 Clubman S with the factory sport suspension.
I'm looking to get rid of the lag between shifts as well as add a few HPs. Nothing drastic as I won't be doing any track racing. Just some extra power that's reliable.
I was looking to add an intake like the Alta or DDMworks, but from what I read, that does more harm to HP than good. I read good things about adding the Alta hot side boost tube. Would I benefit from a fmic if completely stock?I read that ecu/piggy back tunes aren't possible on the newer models without voiding warranty. Lastly, how would I increase the sound of the BOV, which brings a smile to my face every time I hear it!
Thanks in advance for any help and advice!

To reduce lag:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...g-upgrade.html
Skip the intakes.
FMIC will not make or free up HP. It will allow you to run harder longer without drop in performance.
Check out JB+ by Burger Tuning. Great upgrade for HP, will not void warranty because it is virtually undetectable. It is a piggyback module that you take off before going in for service and they will be none the wiser.
Louder BOV, not sure.

definatelly go with the JB+......by far the best mod i have for my car.
if you want to hear the BOV....get a CAI, dont worry about losing power, i have one on mine and i cant say ive honestly noticed a difference in power one way or the other.....i do however have fantastic turbo and BOV noise now.
i would also look into the D1 Spec. its like a sprint booster except a fraction of the cost.....it does a good bit to take out some of the pedal lag.

Start with a Forge intercooler
http://www.waymotorworks.com/forge-a...r-s-turbo.html
And NM discharge pipe, they fit much better than the alta
http://www.waymotorworks.com/nm-disc...ipe-black.html
And the torque arm bushing is great bang for the buck
http://www.waymotorworks.com/nm-engi...nt-insert.html
Sprint Booster is another great way to get rid of throttle delay

Thanks for the advice guys! So a good start would be the JB+ from Burger, an NM discharge, and intake?
Is the JB+ a plug and play? Does it adapt to the addons and is the $299 module all that is needed?
Thanks again!

Hey ClubmanBob, I'm going to assume you are new so I'll make this simple and direct.
Be very careful what you take away from this forum. There are quite a few "Enthusiasts" who are very quick to offer mechanical as well as legal opinions that can and will get you into a whole lot of trouble real quick. We have an excellent example right here in these few posts.
Let me assure you that using this component will void your warranty whether it's "virtually undetectable" or not. Using this device or any device that changes or modifies the OEM computer management system will void your Manufacturer's Warranty! The issue of being "virtually undetectable" and or discovered is a secondary issue and has no legal bearing on whether or not any such "modifications" constitute a breach of your obligations under the warranty. You may get away with it but that doesn't mean your actions were ok.
Remember "Mcameron" is not going to pay your repair bills!
Better course of action would be to ask the device's manufacturer if the use of it will void your warranty? And then get it in writing!
Many people choose to use such devices and hope they get away with it if things go wrong but that is your choice and you should make it with the full knowledge of the actual information relevant to the decision.
Bottom Line... Don't put too much faith in what you hear from "Enthusiasts" who have no skin in your game!!!

1) i never said that, 6thgear said that.
2) a manufacturer cannot just straight up and void your warranty for running aftermarket parts. look up the Magnuson-Moss Warranty act

They can't void your warranty but they can deny warranty claims. Any engine modifications (intake, boost tubes, bov, tunes) give Mini the right to deny any warranty claims related to the engine. That doesn't mean that they will deny claims however they don't technically have to fix your engine if your timing chain breaks and you have an aftermarket intake on it. FWIW many people have had luck getting stuff fixed under warranty with engine mods installed.

If I put on a CAI... And one day all of a sudden my oil pan falls off, mini cannot reasonably claim that my intake caused the problem.
However, if I put on a CAI, and the filter failed and a piece of debris found its way into the turbo causing it fail. Then the dealer would have a legitimate argument for denying service.
Thanks again for the info. I do understand any modification done can void the warranty. This is why I'm not looking to delve too deep into being heavily modified. A downpipe, a piggy back, and an intake are pretty mild IMO and could easily be put back to stock if need be.

Sorry, but what we seem to have here is an individual who can't stop digging themselves into a deeper and deeper hole. This individual is dangerous to himself and others. I am particularly concerned that he references the Magnuson-Moss Warranty act yet I seriously doubt he has ever actually read any, let alone all of the legislation. We should ask "Mcameron" where he got his law degree and which particular states he is licensed to practice in. The boy is mistaken on basically all his points and is responsible for them whether he is the originator or just restating misinformation from others.
You need to understand the difference between an action that voids the warranty coverage and the discovery of that action... A warranty is a part of the contract between the Manufacturer and the Purchaser of a product. The Manufacturer agrees to cover the cost of repair or replacement of the product if the Purchaser abides by the requirements of the warranty. The action of the purchaser outside the requirements of the warranty may constitute a "breach" of that contract on the part of the Purchaser and as such, that action may relieve the Manufacturer of its obligation to cover the cost of repair or replacement of the product. That's the way it works under the law... The question of discovery and the actual denial of coverage is a separate matter.
You should know that the MINI computer maintains a "Log" of its performance and the performance of all the devices attached to it. This "Log" can and is downloaded to the dealer at the time of service and can be shared with the manufacturer as required. Let me further assure you that if your car suffers a significant failure the Manufacturer (MINI) will have that file examined to determine if any modifications have been made to the engine management system or any of its related devices. They're not stupid and most often they find record or evidence of the device's use.
As I said, many people take actions that are adverse to their obligations under the warranty and that's their choice. But they should be aware of the potential ramifications of those actions and weigh the value of taking that action verses the potential costs of that action. Just understand what you're doing before you do it! And be very careful who you listen to!

also, responsible in what way exactly?

please read through this link from edmonds then we can talk:

Mr."Mcameron"... Please do not refer to me as "Pal"... I am not your Pal and I resent being referred to as such!
not only have you mistakenly attributed someone elses quotes to me, but you have also attacked my claims while providing no evidence to yours.
so unless you are the warranty coordinator for BMW/ Mini North America, please provide some sources.
I do understand the potential risk of doing any type of modification is loss of warranty at the dealerships/manufacturers discretion.
I think any interpretation made of any Act or disclosure is moot, as its up to the manufacturer to interpret it as it so pleases. We as consumers have little power to interpret warranties or Acts.
Thanks again for all the info though fellas. I'm merely dipping my toes in the proverbial pond here!

Wow, not sure who pissed in who's Cheerios today but what a thread to welcome a new member. I can say this is not typical and please do some reading and research here ot see what others have done and their impressions as results to draw your own conclusion. There are many things you can do to these cars and different ways to do them. I think if you are looking to do a DP then yes it is a bolt-on but to most people that is a decent mod, noting too simple as it can be a pain and then disables the cat which is a gov't law (I don't really care personally, does Texas?) and then a CEL is thrown unless you get a CAN tool or a tune to turn the light off. This is not your normal stripes, tint, RSB type of mod IMO.
I'd rather not deal with CEL issues which is why I'm looking for just some minor upgrades. From what I've been reading intakes, and hot side pipes don't cause CEL issues. I'm assuming the JB+ mod won't since its a piggy back add on? Or am I wrong?

Ok thanks for the confirmation on that! Now I would like to start with an intake, ssooooo my next question would be, which one seems to work best for everyone? AEM would be my choice but they don't seem to make one for the 2013 clubman s.

i honestly dont think you will notice a difference as far as performance goes between the different CAI, mechanically they are all just about the same.....so really you just need to choose which one looks best.
i went with the DDM street intake because it was the cheapest one i could find, the filter element is K&N so the important bit is a quality product, the rest is just some sheet metal and silicon elbows, so i saw no reason to spend $200-400 more than i had to..... the DDM street cost me $180 and i have nothing bad to say about it.

Final question (for now
) how difficult/easy is it to put this on. I'm not the most mechanically savvy person, but I can follow directions well.
this is what i've done to my non-tracked clubman, in order: *2011 S*
Suspension:
Tires first, 86 those run flats, HUGE difference right off the bat. Like wow.
Springs/Shocks, I went with NM springs and Koni Yellows, looks like you have sport suspension so enjoy it! (mine was stock)
NM torque arm insert. Best 69 bucks spent, no more torque steer or bump steer.
TSW under chassis brace (personal pref, i really like how it sort of glued the body together a bit more and firmed up things in the corners)
Engine:
Intercooler to keep heat soak down on long runs (i liked the forge unit myself)
K&N Panel filter (you already have a stock cold air intake, and pretty much one of the best for the car, so maybe just upgrade the filter?)
JB+ if you want more kick, fast and easy
I hear plenty of swoosh now and didn't feel the need to upgrade the BOV
This is just what i did to my car, and so far have enjoyed all of the improvements... I didn't go with a larger rear sway bar after riding in a buddies car with a 22 installed. Didn't like feeling the backend come around more than I felt comfortable with, but that's user preference like all of these upgrades. This is just stuff i felt should have been in the car already.
Honestly the best experience i've had with mods is getting rides in other peoples modded cars to feel them out first. I think it's pretty amazing how each mini has a totally different feel from the next, at least for me anyway.

in a nutshell:
1) disconnect the hoses going to the stock air box ( just need to loosen the clamp and they pull right off)
2) undo the 3 screws holding the top of the stock air box on
3) remove the top of the stock air box and stock filter
4) put on the new metal housing and attach with the 3 screws you just removed
5) attach the new air filter with the supplied clamps and reattach the stock air hoses and youre done.
its pretty easy and only took me 15 mins at most.
if you can assemble IKEA furnature, you can put the new intake on.
if you are looking for something a bit different, i hear the DOS intake is pretty good as well.
or for a more factory look, the JCW intake....although i dont know how well youll be able to hear the BOV with this option.
that was over about a year. Very last thing I have done is the JB+
INstalled correctly, no CEL. However, there was an enthusiast who installed incorrectly and got a CEL, but later installed correctly and CEL went away. The JB+ comes with paperwork that clearly states they are not responsible for damages and that the unit is for "off road use" only, so get one at your discretion. I've had one on for the last 300 miles with no telling issues.
