Drivetrain 5th Generation Eaton in new Mini!
As many of you have heard, the new Cooper S (build date July 1st or later) will be getting a 5th Generation Eaton Supercharger. Eaton claims that this generation has an "innovative rotor coating that allows for tighter internal clearances" and that "These tighter clearances allow for increased supercharger efficiency and performance, resulting in improved horsepower and torque at lower engine RPMs." The information can be seen from this Eaton Press Release http://www.eaton.com/NASApp/cs/Conte...=1052176868509
I have two questions. While this probably will not affect the peak horsepower, I wonder how much is gained in the lower rev range. If I get no extra peak, but an extra 5 hp across the lower range (<3500 rpm) that would be great. Mini is only advertising an increase of 7hp peak, but this doesn't always equate to the average hp increase. Does anyone have any knowledge of the effect of the 5th gen SC? Does it have a noticeable affect.
Also has anyone seen the 0-60 times for the MCS? I would think that with the 5th gen Eaton, and ECU tweak (of 7hp, 5 ft. lbs of torque), and a gear ratio tweak, that the 0-60 times may be quite interesting.

That sounds like the same wording used by MINI to describe the supercharger used in the JCW kit.
I doubt 7 hp & 5 lb-ft would make a measurable difference in 0-60, but a supercharger with tighter tolerances may allow mods to make even more power than they already do.

I believe it was Eric at Helix who let the cat out a little bit ago. He said he heard from a very reliable source that the S will be getting the same coating as the JCW. Now there's even less reason for the JCW kit.

That stinks. I would have hoped with the extra hp and gearing that we would have seen more. The first gear is very tall. I hope that they shortened that one. I would think that a 170hp, 2,600lb car could make it in the 6.4-6.5 second range.

My car has started production today!! Do you think mine will have this new coat? If so, is this all that makes the 7hp difference? Please tell me yes to both of those questions!!
I would love to have one of the rare 04s with the 170 hp
Also, I know this is off topic but how long are average production->at dealer times on the west coast?
Thanks!

dgszweda - don't you have the pulley? I've got the 19% and believe when I tell you first gear isn't too tall. There's not enough traction. Traction is the enemy. A shorter first gear would just make it worse. Besides, b/c of MINI's gearing, we can beat more powerful cars (like the WRX for example) from 3rd gear on. Having that kind of power at higher speeds is pretty awesome and maybe more useable too.
Greatgo,
I do have a pulley and you can loose traction quickly. But you have to dump some rpms to take off quick. If you slowly roll off the line and go about 1,000-1,100 rpm for a few feet with the car in gear and then floor it, it bogs until it gets to about 2500rpm, then it takes off like crazy. The bog is aggravating to me. This isn't the stumble. But I agree with you on the better gearing in the middle gears. Maybe they have done this. I do enjoy that aspect of the car as well. I would also like to see 6th gear a little higher for better gas mileage.
