Here's a picture of the mid january-on production 2004 MCS inside hanger (note that the orientation is perpendicular to the exhaust):

Here's a picture of how it used to be oriented (from the Scorpion exhaust- note the hangers are parallel to the exhaust):

Both inside hangers are affected.

I'm taking my exhaust to a shop to get fitted tomorrow (because I have no welding skills), so I'll try and take better pictures of the corrected hanger then.

i've been rolling with just the two outer hangers attached on my system for two months now with no issues.

i wouldn't normally do that, but hey, i saved who knows how much taking it to an exhaust shop doing it myself.

If your exhaust isn't swinging or hitting the rear bumper you're probably okay.

Can't you just make a temporary hanger with a block of wood with 2 holes drilled
through perpendiculary and use that so the exhaust doesn't jump upward
when you hit a bump? it's better than nothing.

I ended up installing the Scorpion by removing the inboard rubber hangers all together and am just using the outboard hangers for mounting like EmCeeEss. This set-up is working fine for me and after a day of hard driving I haven't had any rubbing/vibrating/allignment issues.

Way,

I'm not sure if yours has the new style or not, but you can check for yourself without lifting the car - you can see the hanger just by looking up under the rear bumber.

You have the old hangars, the change was made starting with 02/2004.

Thanks to all that helped me determine that I have the old style exhaust hangers. Some dealers are discounting the pre 2/04 JCW kit so if I go that route I may save a few bucks.

i think you'd be fine with just the two outer hangers - in addition to that you have the center section support... that exhaust aint coming off.
you could do the wood thing but it wouldnt be necessary
good luck!

I'll have kits here that will allow the Milltek Quick-Fit catback to install perfectly on a Feb. 2004 production or later MCS. So if you are worried, don't be. Testing and fit have been completed today at Milltek in the UK. -Pete, Stratmosphere

I'd like to know why the hell MINI changed the exhaust hangar (other than to spite all aftermarket exhausts)

Hi Pete -

Just to clarify...is that an adapter that you'll sell seperately? If so, could I use it to install other types of pre-04 exhausts on my ‘04 S (specifically Magnaflow)? Or does it just work with the Milltek?

Thanks!

I'm with MINI USA. We consistently make enhancements to the MINI in an effort to make it a better product for our customers. There have, in fact, been several changes made to the exhaust hangers for the MINI since its introduction. These were implemented to provide the necessary flexibility for the exhaust while keeping vibration to a minimum. If you'd like to discuss this further, please phone us at (866) ASK.MINI and mention Reference # 200414900024 so that we can help you more efficiently.

I bought a used JCW exhaust that was for 03 hangers, and i have an 04. I heated up the joints on the jcw exhaust with a torch and then just bent them... no need to weld.

works perfect, no rattles and the exhaust is too beautiful for words.

A flammable block of wood near the hot exhaust might not be a great idea.

I wonder if the clunking noises I'm hearing over bumpy roads are from my '03's stock muffler. Do you think the dealer would retrofit this new style to my car to remedy that? Or will I have to go out on my own to an exhaust shop and have them do it?

My MCS is a 01/04 build and has the "new style" hangers -- the inner hangers are perpendicular rather than parallel to the system.
