I have just recieved my K&N filter (RU 1520) That Andy Recommended To me tho fit on my Alta Intake. IT is GREAT!!! the fit is perfect, the sound is much better (less whooshing, like a 1967 olds 442 w/o an air cleaner) and the performance and S/C whine is as strong as ever. I would definitely recommend the change from the Alta foam to the K&N gauze.
Andy @ Ross tech, thank you again and Minifletch I also appreciate your input. You may want to take a look @ andy's setup. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ic=23873&7

One of these days, I'll do some logging to see if there is any flow difference between the UNI (Alta) and K&N filters.

I have the new alta intake (no gauze around the filter) will this replacement filter also fit on that?

No clue, measure the pipe diameter and the amount of space for the filter.

Ill see if I can dig it up, but I read this article where a big time japanese tuner did a comparison on filter elements. The results were, atleast for the initial clean filters, that the foam flowed better but let more crap in. So based on that I try to not use foam intake elements.

MrWhoa,

I think that's backwards--or at least contrary to the last independent test I could find. I'll see if I can dig it up, but it was essentially that gauze flowed better initially, but loaded up more quickly and passed more material.

I'll post back when I find the reference that I had. It's tough to find independent #'s for these things. If you can find the test please do the same.

Well, that's embarrasing. I posted on the subject last year. See this for the last time we discussed.

If someone wants to pop for testing some mini-specific filters I'll chip in. It'd be good to get non-sponsored data.

i am confused...

is this more of a sound/appearance thing, or are there performance gains to be realized from this?

I thought this was more of a "is it better to replace the filter each time or clean it?"
