Screaming Demon Coil Pack anyone?
Hey guys,
Interested in replacing my coil pack (3rd terminal is corroding a little). Any of you guys have experience with the Screaming Demon? I don't like the MSD as its red and I like to keep my engine bay completely black.
Do you need to increase the spark gap due to the higher voltage? Thanks.

Go with the Screamin Demon never had a problem with one yet.
the MSD coil fits like crap as you can't use the factory bolts, then if you get smaller bolts the rubber isolators don't fit right. Also it is rated at a lower voltage output. and on top of that it cost more.

Stock one has brass connectors, and the wires have SS. That alone is good reason to dump the OEM one. The combination of the two metals easily produces patina and eventual corrosion there, and subsequent misfires. IMO a really bad design.
I ended up with an MSD and MSD wires. I use stock rubber rings for the base and got new rubber ones from the hardware store that fit for the top. Problem solved.

Thanks for the opinions all..
A lot to take in -- Way, I respect your opinion a lot. Other guys - sounds like there is a lot of debate behind this one.
I don't want the MSD for a few reasons: 1) fitment 2) color -- I like my engine bay to look as stock as possible -- sounds stupid I guess.
Guess I'll wait around for a few more people who have the Screaming Demon to chime in...before I make a purchase.

Not looking for performance gains .. just looking for something that will upgrade from stock, fit like stock, not harm the engine in anyway or cause issues BUT will not corrode like stock.
So my question is do I just get stock and expect to replace it every few years.

But since color is a concern, not $$, sounds like the screamon demon or stock....
dielectric grease does help on the stock...net if you got it on before the rust is bad it might not become a huge issue....

stick with stock...all of those other coil packs have been debunked as they do nothing for your mini...like what was stated before...if you have a problem with corrosion...wire brush or steel wool...brush off the corrosion and a nice coat of di-electic grease and your fine...something else to consider as well is cleaning off the wire contacts...i usually use q-tips to clean the gunk and stuff out of them till they are clean and shiny...light touch of d-e grease and they are good to go...i usually check and or clean once a month
i tried the msd nonsense and they proved to do nothing so i dumped it all and went back to stock and my mini has been happy ever since

+1, we haven't heard any issues with Screamin' Demon, but you also can't go wrong with stock or MSD (if color weren't an issue ).

i have the SD CP. no issues with mine. generally, when you do a coil pack, youd wanna do wires and plugs with it, or you prolly Wont see any difference (maybe thats other ppls problems...)
i had Mini do my purchase and install. they rec'd the SD version, as theyve seen the MSD CPs blow / fry several times on minis...
so, Screamin Demon is my vote!

I have had both the MSD (first) and Screaming Demon (second) coils on my R53s. Both worked fine and did not corrode like the OEM. I would recommend the Screaming Demon due to better installation.
I switch to aftermarket coils because of the corrosion issues with OEM coil contacts. I have looked at many coil connectors on club members cars, and everyone has had corrosion. One enough to actually cause a mis-fire. Once the OEM coil corrosion starts, cleaning only temporarily cleans the contacts and it will corrode again soon.
I use the Kingsborne wires. Probably no better than stock but I wanted to change the wire color for a little bling.

Here is a photo of the engine compartment of my GP. The GP intercooler is larger than other models so it covers the spark plugs and much of the wires. Also the wires are in a little bit of a shadow so they do not show up as well in the photo. I went with red wires to go with the red accents on the GP.

Looks great!
