I was just talking with someone and they asked what I was going to get next for my car. I responded "probably a computer chip", and he said "no you should get that after you are all done, that should be your last mod, so it can be tuned specifically to what you have done to your car. i.e exhaust, intake, pulley, etc.

Now this isn't the first I have heard of this and I know that GIAC is going to tune their chip specifically for different size pulleys, but what about everything else?

Most of the aftermarket ECU programs are specific to what mods you have, or will be doing, and what octane fuel is available in your area. I have the Evotech upgrade which was tuned for the 15% pulley, CAI, catback exhaust, and 91 octane fuel. So the person giving you advice is right, but you can do the chip to what your mods. will be. Since you already have the intake and pulley, you should decide if you plan on changing the exhaust system or not, then go ahead with the software upgrade.

 

gosharks is right. But stuff like intakes and exhausts don't matter too much so if you know you're going to get an exhaust, I'd tell whoever you're getting the pulley from that you want a program for all of the mods you will have. You should be able to safely run an ECU program for 15% pulley, intake and exhaust even though you may not have the exhaust yet. Then when you do, you'll have the perfect program for the long run. :smile:

To find out, the best person to talk to would be Eric at HELIX13.
He told me that certainly the first released version would be for intake, 15% pulley, cat-back exhaust. This is the common setup. Versions for 17% and 19% to follow. Other ECU upgrades are tuned to 91 octane and 93 octane as mentioned before.

I'm not sure if we will see a stock ECU version or autocross version from GIAC.
It's probably better to be skeptical about how finely tuned software will be for a particular setup unless dyno test results show a difference.

Software could be tuned for any of the following and more:
Rebored throttlebody
Larger intercooler
Exhaust header
ported and polished cylinder head
Shrick cam
Turbo

 

More than likely, the pulley ECUs will be tuned for an intake and less-restrictive exhaust.
