i think it's silly for us to go back and forth on the merits of our respective tunes. i personally don't mind having more options, so the more tuners out there pushing the envelope, the better. renntech/paws/lenny/etc are down in FL. that's like 2500 miles, or a 5 day drive from socal. terry's about 1-1.5hrs away. so it's pretty obvious which direction i'd go. that's not to discount what lenny can do. but honestly, terry's done a LOT of development in a very short amount of time. everyone's that tested the JB+ has been pretty stoked. is it better than lenny's tune? who knows. but it'll sure be fun to find out!

btw, terry has driven to the dyno. the results were posted several pages back.

Lenny now works for them and no longer at Renntech.

My apologies, I might have been confusing them with another tuner.

No problem. I've seen posts about issues with the auto from other tuners too. That's why I wanted to point out that Lenny's tunes don't have those problems.

Pidge1114. Not trying to give you a hard time. I've seen some of your posts and they are usually pretty funny. I agree most people want the easiest way Just trying to point out that custom tunes and piggybacks will be different.

Im pretty sure for the extra money you pay PAW/Renntech, you are getting a custom tune. Not something off the shelf.

A custom tune to me is Dyno time.

I don't think west coasters would get that from any east coast tuners.

+1 for the custom tune only coming from dyno time.

Terry, what type of data logging have you been able to do with the JB+? Specifically knock? Since you're in Cali I assume you're using 91 octane, for the rest of us that have 93 it will simply be an added safety measure for knock prevention which is always a good thing. Should we entertain the need for one step colder plugs or no?

I'm using the CT to monitor timing advance in dash. On 91 octane I've noticed some mild timing drops from time to time on the factory tuning. With the JB+ we're working off the factory timing tables which has timing mapped lowered at the 2-4psi higher boost curve it runs. But I still see some minor drops on 91. Not anything I'd consider severe knock response or anything bordering on audible knock. 93 octane does greatly improve things though.

The JB+ has a trim pot inside that allows the user to adjust the overall aggressiveness of the mapping. So those using meth or race gas could up the aggressiveness a bit and those using 91 octane may need to lower it a bit. Ideally we plan to have the default set such that it should work for most 91-93 applications without need of adjustment.

I'm also running the NGK 5992 plugs which are one step colder. I've not been able to quantify any benefit with them but I don't think it's a bad idea to switch over.

While things are quiet here I thought I'd post about something I saw over at the BMW forum. It seems that the DME for the N54 has been cracked and someone has developed an opensource flash tool for BMWs.

That's right, OPENSOURCE! I have contacted the tuner who said they might be interested in the R56 in the future. Keep your fingers crossed.

Here's a thread posted by Terry about an open source laptop based flash.

Exactly. I feel like the computer isn't opening the throttle as far and as fast as it could when you blip the gas on a downshift. This is backed up by it being more balky in non-sport mode.

Does this mean the N14 is a possible candidate for some tune love?

There are no plans to add MINI support to that particular project at this time. But who knows, maybe some day.

Because they don't have one!

They are jealous that the N14 can be flash tuned with an Access Port and an N18 can't.

Yea, too bad no one supports the AP for N14 anymore.

But, we've gone over this multiple times and no one wants to capitalize on it.

I would encourage anyone interested in bringing this tuner to our platform to e-mail them and express your feelings. A few months ago I e-mailed Terry @BMS about doing something for Minis. Initially he said no, but now look where we are

If we show tuners there there is $ ready to be made we can make this happen. Although I love JB+, I also love the idea of a competitive marketplace. In the end competition is better for the consumer, which is us!

I will admit I haven't read through the entire thread but I have searched it and tried to read the relevant sections. Do I understand correctly that the current hypothesis is the basic JB+ will give about half the normal gains on a factory JCW setup, but that the Stage I and Stage II might be more effective for a JCW N18 car?

Even at half the gain, it would still be worth doing. Terry, have you guys had a chance to look into the JCW scenario any further?
