After pulley, ECU, CAI, exhaust, header, ignition wires, colder spark plugs, wheels/tires, and brake kit, what's a good choice for next mod to obtain more juice from the 1.6 L? Throttle body?

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!

A cam or larger intercooler would be next choice if your sticking to engine upgrades.
Didn't see an anti-swaybar or a short shifter in your listing. Both will make the drivability of the MINI greatly enhanced unless your strickly a straight line driver. They would definately enhance the mods you have already added.

Nice setup so far...

There is plenty.

For the engine bay-
19% pulley over the 15% or 17% depending on which you have.
GIAC ECU- when it arrives compare it to your ECU. If you have 19% pulley the GIAC will later be tuned for a specific pulley size with better results.
Larger intercooler- Alta for $1000. Or wait for the RDR to arrive for about $500. Air to air vs liquid to air.
Turbo kit from M7- lots of $$$ but lots of power.
Nitrous for the MCS from M7-

Suspension upgrades-
The mininum is a rear swaybar
Add lowering springs vs coil overs
Rear adjustable control arms
Stronger end links
Lastly a tower strut bar/rear Pilo strut bar

To add to traction-
Quaife Limited Slip Differential- helps front wheels maintain 50% traction to each wheel.

For the nut behind the wheel-
Performance Driving school classes.
----

SO Davecsumini,
make that pulley 19%
Make that ECU a GIAC tuned to 19%
Wait for the RDR intercooler
Make sure you have the rear swaybar or suspension upgrades in line
Add the LSD for traction.
Have fun Motoring

Thanks for the suggestions! I should've specified that the car in reference has JCW kit, which is equivalent of a MCS equipped with ECU, 15% pulley, exhaust, and colder plugs upgrades. In addition to JCW, the car also has CAI, ignition wires, headers, brakes, and new wheels on the way.

I'll definitely look into the sway bars and suspension upgrades. How about the engine? Is there any other simple "bolt-on" upgrades to obtain more ponies? Nothing overly complicated for a DIY project!

Yes, the fact that you have JCW makes your upgrade path go in at least two directions.

One, you can stay clear of any big upgrades that would void your JCW warranty since that is what you were paying for in the first place so-
Schrick Cam, Turbo, Nitrous are all out of the picture.
In theory something like a larger intercooler or even throttlebody would be considered messing with the JCW kit indirectly afterall these are all integral parts of the engine.

Or two, you can say heck, what will give me more to add to the JCW kit upgrades without replacing the upgraded parts outright, i.e. keep the current mods and add to them.

So here is my revised list for you.
Throttlebody- 63mm rebore about $400 to $450. I have one but it hasn't really produced that much power on a dyno for HELIX13 except at the highest rpm and then only about 2 HP. Randy Webb says it might give an additional 3-4 HP
I think it makes my throttle response a little better but I feel the biggest benefit is how it might work with upgrades like a good cold air intake, 19% pulley, ECU, header and free flowing exhaust.

Larger intercooler- I think for the money, about $500 if the RDR intercooler is in that range, it would be the way to go. Part of the reason for this is given the type of upgrades that are in the JCW kit which are not the most powerful but still good, the best complementary upgrade part would be a better intercooler.

Let me clarify- the JCW kit is built for power performance but within safe limits so that warranty can be maintained. Consider the pulley is 15% not 19%, the ECU upgrade hardly produces power while the GIAC upgrade might add 10+ ft lbs of torque, the JCW exhaust looks OK but has minimal power gains and is a restrictive exhaust compared to Borla sport or Milltek sport. Now given that these parts are more middle of the road in performance, the throttlebody might indeed only be of small benefit. The aftermarket intercooler may be more efficient and provide better power for the money. At $1000 it is too pricey but at $500 it's worth a look.

Finally I would say that any MCS that has 200 HP will have trouble keeping traction unless tires are really well planted to the ground with good sticky rubber and with the help of a Quaife Limited slip differential. The LSD is a costly option but allows power to be transferred to BOTH front wheels nearly equally. Not only does it help with performance but in inclement weather it provides for safety.

Definitely rear sway bar 22mm set to the middle setting.

I just added a TB and got 5 HP. MINI Madness was the one I had put on. Love it.

That 5 HP was confirmed on the dyno with a pre and post (TB install) run.

195 to the wheels. Also flashed my chip which added 10 HP (on the Dyno)

I'm considering Madness TB as well. What CAI are you using? How about the hose?

to MarkC - Which ECU program did you use? How much torque did it add. I believe increasing rpm cut-off alone serves to increase horsepower without changing torque, so the actual torque increase is what would be impt. for me. What was 4500-7000 power increase? Thanks

I see I have raised a few questions. First I would post if I knew how. Let me check my dyno sheet and get back with answers to above. Flash was Evotech. I was told very few Works have been flashed so I was a bit unsure of the results.

Again, I am not dodging folks and questions, very busy and need to get my sheet

Back soon

I am a big fat lier.... my dyno is at 183-184 HP.

I have no idea how to post this... andy@rosstech, do you want me to fax to you so you can post??

I have the torque and HP sheets.

Sorry for puffing the figures, it wass not intended.

I can say, my total gain with TB and Flash is right at 14-15HP.

Why lowering springs instead of coil overs?

I am presuming from your postings that you live slightly west of California. With that being the case, do your suspension modification suggestions change if the Mini were to live in Chicago with all of our lovely rough and pot-holed roads?

(Also, I know this is off topic, but why does it say 1st gear and 4th gear, etc., by some user names and it says Neutral by mine? Sorry, I'm new.)

Do you before and after runs? B/c a JCW should dyno at 178HP at the wheels (equal to 200HP at the crank with 11% driveline loss).

If your after is 183-184, then you only got 5-6HP with TB and EVO ECU.

SteveS

first, I have faxed sheets to Andy to post.

with regard to torque, with the flash I saw a 10ftLb at 400 rpm... decreasing to 140 FtLb at 7000. Red line is now 7000.

Also, I do not know what the spped is limited to OEM or with WORKS but I can tell you I have been to 140 mph and felt like I had plenty to go.

Again, with Flash (Evotech) and TB... I am just at or slightly under 185 HP.

Hope this helps.

Sorry.... max torque was at 160 FtLb starting at 3600 rpm slowing droping at 4500 rpm to 158 Ftlb.

5000 rpm 152FtLb
5500 rpm 149FtLb
6000 rpm 140FtLb
6500 rpm 140FtLb
7000 rpm 139FtLb

Hope this helps

My guess is that you're referring to the red thing - ignition coil pack! Perhaps it's the intercooler???

MSFITOY,

Is it the high-performance shop rags in the intercooler pipes? Mine doesn't have that - do you recommend cotton of polyester?

Them are Mus musculus inhibitors currently under development. Compositions is top secret. Probably won't need them when the intercooler arrives
