Removal of Carbon from Valve Area with Steamcleaner?

Just wondering if it is possible to use a steam cleaner to direct steam into that area to help lift of the carbon or if this a definite no no?????

Just picked up a 4 bar steam cleaner to use on the car interior, round house and was wondering if it could be used for decoke?

It would not hurt. You need to be very careful that the valves are 100% closed like with any other cleaner. I think your biggest hurdle is going to be how to get the tip of the wand inside the port. There's not much room to work with since the opening faces the firewall.

Sounds risky...solvents are usually used cause they evoprate...watter dripping down into the motor...sounds like a way to make it go boom!!
If you took it appart, i bet it would be fine, but to steam it clean inplace...sounds like a risk...

Provided that his intake valves are sealing correctly and the cam is in the correct position it won't be a problem.

^^^ I agree, after watching the service guys do the walnut blasting I'm more than positive that I could do the next one.

Shame no-one in the UK seems to be doing the walnut blasting.

Looking at getting a rifle bore cleaning kit as per the intake cleaning thread and having a go with that.

ight as well try and clean up throttle body and intake manifold, fit noisemaker delete hose from 2012 model year, evolve fmic, jcw turbo, jcw exhaust manifold, bsh occ and dual tap and that will hopefully be engine mods done bar evolve remap.

Then it's Quaife install and new clutch/flywheel and that should be my list of mods done as already sorted the handling.....

Can I ask a dumb question.
You mention that the valves have to be closed before cleaning them.
Prior to taking off the intake manifold or after, how do you accomplish that?

You need to visually see that they are closed. So you would do it with the intake off.

But not all of them would be closed because of the cams in their different positions.

That's my question. I'd really like to see some pics of someone doing this or at least a step by step process from start to finish. I know the valves face the firewall but that's about all I know on it. Like do you have to replace the cover gasket, is there a manual way to move the valves to the closed position, etc.

No need to replace gasket, rubber is still OK on IM after cleaning.

You can move the valves manually via a 18mm bolt on the passenger side (remove the wheel to see it. Its on end of the crank shaft. We were able to rotate it without removing the spark plug, but it could help to alleviate pressure.

My valves were so dirty I couldn't tell which ones were open/closed. In fact, 3 of the valves held carb cleaner at once! LOL.

Thanks a million. With this info and another piece I obtained I think I'm
comfortable with doing this. Now just to find the time.
I guess seafoam is a good choice for cleaner from what I have gathered.

Not strong enough. Tried that and found that cab cleaner (aerosol type with straw) works much better
