Possibly upgrading to a R56, just some advice please

After trolling this forum for a while now, I have decided it may be time to get back into the turbo tuning world. I am looking at purchasing a 2009 Astro Black R56 with about 25K on the odometer. I drove it and was very happy with the OEM setup. A few mods that I would be making for response sake would be:

  1. ITG Drop In Filter
  2. WMW Upgraded BOV
  3. DoS noise maker delete
  4. NM Torque Arm Insert
I also looked into adding boost tubes and a Down pipe. A tune would follow if I did the latter mods. Anything else I am missing on the power side or any advise you guys can give me?

You only need 3 mods on the power side....1) FMIC 2) Downpipe 3) Tune

Skip boost tubes and the like.

If it doesn't have an oil catch can and boost tap I'd get that definitely. WMW has them from BSH which is probably one of the most sold units around. I love it and you won't believe the crap you pull out of the engine.

rj: Thanks for saying that the mileage is shown on the odometer rather than "the clock." It doesn't take much to make my day when it's cold and rainy out.

I'm still keeping my eye out for someone who's buying something instead of "pulling the trigger."

Happy to oblige Jim

I am kind of on the fence with this whole thing to be honest. I love the feel and drive of my R50. Just felt like the R56 had the power I wanted, just not the steering feel or the ride. Maybe suspension would be the order to take here with some basic bolt-on stuff like what has been listed.

Thumper is spot on. i have done the tubes myself and they did nothing. torque arm is a must. with the filter don't rush, only replace it when the stock one is stuffed, you won't notice anything if you just go out and swap it. i didn't notice anything when i replaced mine.

Danny,

Not set in stone just yet. In fact, after all of the work that I have put into my R50 I may end up keeping it and adding on my extras this summer (gauges, sparco seat, etc...)

But yes it is the m7 splitter

Ahh good, I'm not crazy! In that case, dibs!

Yeah, you have that R50 built up quite nicely... let us know what you decide! I do still yearn for more raw HP now and then, but the Cooper is just so fun to drive. After Spring when I finish the coilover/spacer install, I think I'll be in love all over again. Maybe I'll save up for an old fox body mustang to drag race on the weekends

I will keep you in the loop for sure! Honestly I am leaning towards keeping the R50 now that everything is on the table and further tuning it wrought just to add a bit of umph to it. Which coil overs did you decide on? I hope you did the ST over the vmaxx. I was thinking of doing some but the yellows and TSW springs seem to be enough for me right now

This.

Although I would add the hotside boost tube just because I hate the stupid "muffler" on the OEM tube. And an oil catch can just for good measure.

Thanks! If you keep it I'd love to hear how the tune works out for you as well, that's something I'm thinking of doing eventually. It's hard to get reviews though, not a lot of tuned Justas around here. I did end up getting the ST coilovers, I got a good price from TheSuspensionSource on them so it was a noo brainer. They're not installed yet, waiting for the spring.. mounting them with some Konig Feathers as well, 4lbs lighter per corner than my current setup

I am not sure who you would have do your tune, but if you are considering the Accessport, the tune can be revised when you add an FMIC and exhaust. Maybe that would move it to the front of the list?
I don't have any dyno results, but the change is quite noticeable on my 08 MCS. Everything else is stock on my car.

An '07 Exige S.

My backup plan is buying a GP and also a classic MINI and VTEC swapping/restoring it.
