Magnaflow plus mini madness header w/o cat = loud...AWESOME

Just finished installing my new magnaflow exhaust on top of the mini madness header with a straight pipe that I already had and boy is it loud when going hard. It has an awesome mean rumble at idol and on light acceleration, but on hard acceleration ...omg it sounds like a race car... I love it!!!

What about inside??? Can you talk to your passenger at 70MPH (or 2800 rpms)?

I will try and grab a sound/video clip. It might be tough with the phone but I'll try.

So far I haven't noticed the noise much cruising on the highway. Especially with the windows up. Most of the rumble comes under acceleration especially heavy acceleration in high torque gears 2-3-4.

When you installed it, did you compare the size of the primary ports on the flange to the exhaust ports on the head?

I'd gonna guess his header ports are smaller than the head ports. This is the case with almost every header on the market.

It is quite raspy, but there is also a slight tick I'm trying to find. It s not an exhaust leak though, at least not one I can find. I've looked over the whole exhaust as well as run seafoam through it and no smoke came out anywhere but the tailpipe and I ran it at all rpm's. I'm thinking it's just valve train noise coming through the header, or the harmonic balancer problem everyone else is talking about. I am parked next to a wall btw so that there is some playback off the wall. I've asked my mechanic friend about the noise ans he thinks its normal considering the mods. I also have an alta cai which whistles at partial throttle which I believe can also be heard in the video.

Side note- the tone is a little deeper in person. The exhaust rumbles a lot more than the video shows.

Man, thats a lot of rasp then. I too have a catless header, but is coupled with a Milltek and the sound is infinitely better.

Did you get the street or race version of the Magnaflow ?

Is there a risk associated with the converse? i.e., is there a reason most manufacturers don't default to BIGGER ports on the header than those on the head? Seems like there'd be a risk of heat or flow problems with header ports being smaller than the head's, and presenting a sort of "lip" to exhaust gas flow.

I doubt I'll be installing an aftermarket header any time soon. But just out of curiosity, what's the fix for this? Measure them both carefully, and run a flex-hone through the header? Obviously you probably wouldn't want to have to do this with the head...

Or just get the ports on the header made bigger?

Sorry for late reply but for someone who reads this down the road. Go to harbor freight, pepboys or order an ebay dremel.

Get an OEM exhaust manifold gasket, which will be bigger than the head ports. Use any bolts to align the gasket to the header flange. Then get a red marker and color the excess flange face between the gasket and port. Very important grind down the flange as much as possible without grinding the primary tube welds. Take your time and do it evenly, about an hours time or less, though it'd take me less than 20 minutes because I've done it many times.

Also buy cheapo long gloves and protective goggles for flying metal shavings.
