Any point in upgrading to a JCW downpipe?

Hi everyone,

I have a R56 with a JCW downpipe-back exhaust. I'm curious - is there any point in upgrading to a JCW downpipe, will it give me any gains and/or will I be able to go up to stg2 on the AccessPort?

Thanks!

No....zero point.

The JCW has a slightly less restrictive cat I've been told, but the design is the same (part #'s are diff though)

The only DP worth getting (IMO) is a catless one.

@ThumperMCS

Not even the one from Akrapovic? Is a cat really that bad when it comes to performance.

The Akrapovic is a nice piece for sure. But for the money, not worth it. For $150 I got my ceramic coated, catless Riss DP...which fit perfectly and provided more gain than any catted DP ever could. Again though....all is just in my opinion. Everyone that has the Akrapovic loves it....but its not for me

The Riss would be appealing to me, but since I have my magnaflow welded up to the stock flex pipe (sans 2nd cat), I would still have the restriction of the stock flex pipe. I'd have to get a pipe with a V Band flange and weld a larger flex pipe to that and weld that back to the magnaflow, then it'd all bolt together. blah. or, cut the RR dp flange, and weld the flex pipe to it and weld the other end to the magnaflow. lol I'd like the disconnect ability though.

Magnaflow has an OE Direct fit downpipe for the MCS comes with a precious metal higher flowing cats but stock diameter until it hits the catback. It's CARB 50-State legal but it flows more than stock due to the cats.

Downpipe 49350 200cell metal cat.
2nd cat pipe 49845 unmonitored 200cell metal cat "mid-pipe" that connects DP to CB
All use OE direct fit standards, so you can buy them in stages. And you don't have to use a Magnaflow cat-back. A Stock, JCW or Borla would work too.

Personally 49350 with Invidia Q300 or Quicksilver dp-back would be best solution if you are keeping the cat and want to have more flow.

If you're going to go cat-less and can't find a cheap used CLRissDP just go OBX stuff and get the DP thermal coated locally for $70. There is nothing special about the R56 DPs unlike Mitsu housing or Subaru bell-mouth DPs which you'd want name brand

When we did testing for magnaflow we saw no gains from the catted DP's they provided us. This has been true too for almost every catted DP we have had on the dyno. As a couple have mentioned already the best route to go is full catless and a tune. If the tune isn't an option then it's best put the money to better use some where else on the car.

So you're saying that if I were to buy an Akrapovic DP, and hook it up to my stock JCW catback, I'll see virtually no power gain?

I have not tested the akra DP, but based on the info they provide and from what I have seen from other 100 cel cats I would expect very little from it. For the cost, especially if tuning is available, it's far more benifical to go catless.

Thanks Mike for all the info.

Where is a good place to buy Riss DP? I notice a lot of the sponsor website don't carry it.

hmmm. i really don't like the sound of a catless exhaust. it loses it's tone, and just becomes ricey

A good deal of this depends on the exhaust system as a whole. The resonator(s) and muffler type play a huge role in how the tone will sound. Pipe material, diameter, thickness, and routing have an effect too.

I know exactly what your talking about as I have heard plenty of "ricey" sounding MINI's, but you can go catless and maintain a good deep tone as long as you choose the right combination of parts.

Here's how mine sounds with my catless exhaust system.

Hehe I meant a catless downpipe on the stock JCW catback. Your exhaust sounds beautiful.

I want a 2.5" DP, but I like the sound of the JCW exhaust. Guess I'm outta luck

Don't know about the Accesport stuff. But I believe the JCW Downpipe is the only higher flow DP that will NOT have a CEL come on, or void the warranty. To some, this is a priority.
