Drivetrain SPEC Clutch Stg 1,2,2+
SPEC Clutch Stg 1,2,2+
Has anyone installed or heard any feedback on the SPEC Stg 2 or 2+ clutch? OEM one is starting to slip.. I've heard good things about the SPEC brand for clutches in other car applications, but never the R56. Its a much more affordable clutch option vs the OS Giken race/GT versions. Stage 1 seems more to be a oem replacement, but since I'm running uprated torque from my RMW tune, going 2 or 2+ maybe a better option.
I had the clutch assembly changed previously because of groaning issues (i believe it was the throwout bearing causing it), at 20k. I'm now just under 60K, so this is quite ridiculous for an OEM clutch going in 40k. Granted I am running uprated power #'s, but thats been for the last 10k. I've driven other cars with OEM clutches with much higher modified specs/#'s. I guess more power in combination with all the premature failings on this board just makes a terrible combination anyways.

No-one seems to have used one?
They are just becoming available over here in the UK and also hear about CCI

Ya this forum is not very technical minded, just oil catch cans and hot air intakes. Lol
Jsc speed sells em too.
I guess more people will have to worry about this when they are out of warranty and start having pre mature clutch failures

I have not used one on a mini but, I did use one on a supercharged bmw m coupe. It was great initially but, within 1,000 miles unfortunately it began to fail. The pressure plate seemed to be giving up causing screeching, slipping, etc. When i called spec to speak with them while i was trying to diagnose what was going on they were very evasive. I replaced it with an stock m5 set-up which lived very well. It was an expensive mistake for me.
I have had many modified cars with various clutch set- ups over the years. No problems with any of them. I would avoid spec if you can.

I had a sponsorship with them a few years back. The clutches they sent had potential to hold great, but the quality was sorta hit and miss. I had a few other MINI owners tell me they had some issues with theirs too. For me it's become too much of a gamble to bother installing them.

My only experience with Spec relates to my 95 Taurus SHO I used to have.
Went through 3 of them under warranty for being defective...then gave up and went another route. Got sick of dropping the subframe and re-doing my clutch every 2 weeks.
I know that doesn't apply to the Mini, but it did sour me on Spec forever. They covered sending me a new one after I sent the old one back each time...but I don't want to go through the same thing with my mini.
Also looking to do my R56 clutch soon, about 35k on my current clutch after it was replaced under warranty...twice. Same deal, my SHO was HEAVILY modified and pushing 300 plus hp and I could run a stock clutch for 50k miles. Not quite understanding the quick wear on the Mini clutch.

Spec Clutch
I just pulled my spec clutch out after 26k, what a piece, almost worn down to the rivets on the clutch plate. I wanted to pull it out at about 2k because it started to squeal and chatter. I know aluminum flywheels can chatter, but this was really annoying. Dont do it !
I had a SPEC stage 3 clutch on my old GTI. I somehow spun the bearing on the input shaft after like 10k miles on it, and they basically told me that it wasn't a manufacturing defect and I'd have to buy a brand new disk. That company's products sucks and their customer service is horrible.
It's a shame that Southbend doesn't make Mini clutches cause they were by far the best aftermarket clutches I've used on my old VW's.

I had the Spec and it got burnt to a crisp within a few months!!!!! I just had the OS Giken installed and am impressed. And yes it is a very noisy clutch. So far I am impressed with the performance so far but am still getting used to it.
Bad experience
I have a 2006 JCW that has SPEC Stage 2 clutch installed. The clutch was professionally installed by the car's previous owner.
It had been running strong and giving the occasional "Chewbacca" growl after a cold startup when taking off from a full stop in first gear. I researched that issue and found out that it was common (with OEM clutch anyway) and didn't give any more thought.
Well, the throw bearing in it failed without warning the week before last and has apparently grenaded the tranny in the process
Car is in the shop and its guts are getting the once over to see exactly what happened. Will be installing OEM clucth.
Went to the SPEC web site this morning and noticed that they no longer list product for MINI.
I know my experience is limited, but I would say stay away from SPEC clutches.
