Drivetrain M7..............On a diet again.

Hmmm lets see here . Ok i have a number for you 03032004. That is the next track day at willow springs . Come out , bring your mini. I will pay for your track day if you turn one lap faster than Peter's. The statment may seem bold but I have witnessed the M7 car on both track and many canyon runs and feel my money is safe. On the track he was moved into the most advanced class, vipers , vettes , track porches etc and did VERY well. On the many canyon runs we have here in L.A I have not seen ONE car manage to stay with him. The combination of his car setup and prep and his driving talent are very impressive. Call me a fan but I am putting my money where my mouth is , how about you?

oh boy another supper bowl party at the canyons. what's for half time pink slips!!!!!
this is great this is what moding is all about it helps to have thinkers in the group always looking how to make the mini faster, lighter. it is to bad that some of these mod's are so expensive but this last one is a cheap mod and shows that you can do lots to your car and get great improvements. thanks for all your post m7 you are the king of the moders so far and im sure you see the results in your cars performance. i hope to see your car sometime when im in so cal so i can see a true race prepaired race mini.

I 100% support Andy's quest for numbers.
(Peter would use something like 150% support
)
Peter likes to use numbers in his product promotions,
and sometimes they are inexplicable, and I ask for more
information, and SOMETIMES the numbers are not
well justified. They were "marketing" numbers.
Sometimes I blow it and get some aspect of the product wrong,
and by making the challenge, I get to learn something.
Now I don't actually think this mod needs anything like
a wind-tunnel test or anything, but I'd like to comment
on the "Lightest and Fastest in so cal" statement.
I think having a mission statement for a company that is short and
unchanging is more important than it being correct.
We used to have "World's fastest supercomputers" as
a statement at a company I worked for a long time.
Anytime someone proposed a change to the product, we
all asked "does this get us closer to the world's fastest
supercomputer?" if not, out the door it went. We ran a
great company for about 15 years that way.
Then, someone started pissing and moaning that we DIDN'T
build the "fastest supercomputers" anymore. Occasionally a
competitor would have one faster for a year or so until our
next one came out. We STILL had the same motto, even though
it wasn't always true. It still helped us make decisions.
Then some "new guys" came in, and changes the motto to
something like "The most powerful solutions to world-class
computing problems" or something like that.
We couldn't figure out what we did, made BUNCHES of bad
decisions, I left, the company got bought, downsized, almost
went extinct, got sold again, and NOW, they are again in
business. They still have a shitty mission statement though.
So, "Lightest and fastest in so cal" should be kept as a goal
even if it's not strictly true at all times. It helps make some of
the decisions. (For example, the wing should get tossed in
the junk barrel since it doesn't help EITHER of these items.)

Actually very well said trippy but you went just a little too far with the last dig about the wing. It does have something to do with being the fastest and numbers. It will be worth a lower NUMBER ( seconds ) thru thurns 8 and 9 at Willow Springs for example there by making the car FASTER. The added speed that will be carried onto the front straight will more than compensate for the additional drag.Other than that slip up good thoughts.

But, that's just a guess on your part right? I can't see how you could make
a claim like that without testing it.
Or did someone measure it.
See, when making statements like this, you should have some actual timings
to back up the claim. That's what I'm asking for in my posts. Not just
"It'll be faster in the turns and that will help" without any testing.

Lets analyze for a second. Peter claims to be the fastest MINI, because nobody can keep up with him in canyon runs. The people who can't keep up with him in the canyon runs, say that they can't keep up with him in the canyon runs. I don't think he is guessing that he is faster then any of the other MINIs there. Do you think he is guessing? Do you think he isn't sure if other MINIs are passing him during the run? If I were to tell you that Peter's new gizmo is good because the gigaspectrosupermeter says that it put out .02hflg on the heat reduction thermal cupling booster valve, would you believe me? I don't see why hard number mean that much to you. Why can't you just not post if you are not happy with what Peter comes out with?
What exactly are you trying to prove?
What exactly are you trying to prove?
Was that wing tested in a wind tunnel? How would some one set it for optimal use at a track ro canyon run? Car and Driver (i think) did a test years ago about wings on cars and they found it often increased drag, hurt top speed and mpg and did little for downforce. This is why I will never but any wing on my street driven car other than what comes from the factory.
Although the new JCW Challange cars have a wing that appears similiar to M7's but that is for a purpose built race car (not street car) and I imagine set up to beneift the handling depending on track conditions.
I for one would have no idea how to set up a wing.
"gigaspectrosupermeter says that it put out .02hflg on the heat reduction thermal cupling booster valve,"
I heard these make huge power. Do you have one cooperspeed? Did you get it from your old sponsor Diamond Racing? or M7?

CooperSpeed, do you even bother reading the posts anymore
before responding?
If you don't like what I post, why can't you simply not respond?
If you take the time to READ what I have said in this thread,
I started off saying "Good mod, will that battery work at -25 F?"
I didn;t get an answer. No big deal, and no surprise at all.
Then Andy got on Peter for the "Lightest..." tagline, and I
defended Peter on it. What!!! You didn't bother reading that one?
Then someone called me on my "Wing = less fast" comment
with no additional information other than "Is so" and I asked
for clarification.
Now you post complaining about my post. Sheesh.
Do you get paid to complain about my posts or what?

I have an adjustable gurney on the wing of my M3 and at Mosport with the wing fully extended I run 10km/h slower at the end of the straight, but I manage lap times that are a couple of seconds faster.
Sometimes you have to go a little slower to go a little faster.

You got me, my bad. I apologize. I guess I was a little quick to respond there...
I guess what I was trying to say, and not pointing this in your direction, is why people need the cold hard facts before they trust a product.
BTW...I agree with what you said.

CooperSpeed,
It depends on the product. If you are claiming to increase horsepower with an intake or an catback, what is the first question people ask? Isn't it how much HP gain does it provide? Dyno charts, dyno charts, please publish dyno charts!
Why is that an accepted question when the benefits of a wing cannot be questioned? Downforce and drag, that is what you want to know. Part of the problem is you cannot hook a wing up to a dyno. You need to test at the track under conditions that do not reflect the daily driving experience.

I AM THE LIGHTEST AND FASTEST IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE INCLUDING MARS! BEAT THAT!
I think this topic should now be shifted to th new Ridiculous Comments forum... I have the most liquid MINI in the history of fish sticks!

First off, I can vouch for Peter's speed and skill through the canyons. His MINI is definitely set up for speed, and it's set up in a way that drag racers really have trouble understanding: CORNERING.
Keeping your speed up through a corner has little to do with how much power you twist on a dyno, or what your trap speed was through the quarter. In fact, it has a lot more to do with psychology than the machine. Peter primarily focuses on making his car feel right. The steering has to feel just so through the corner, the back end has to slip just right, and so on and so forth. What feels right to him might make you require an unscheduled pit stop for an underwear swap.
Modifications are there to make him feel better connected to his machine, and if they accomplish that, you'll see the result with better lap times, and finding Peter standing next to his car looking at his watch, just as you rub the last apex.
In short, road racing is more about the driver than the machine.
That said, I've got $100 on Peter.
