I get drone as well but I'm using a Magnaflow without a res, so it's not surprising at all with that setup. I am surprised that you're experiencing it though to such an extent with your setup.
I do indeed have the stock JCW exhaust. I only drove the car for 15 minutes and about 15 miles. 14 miles was on the highway at 70. And like I said the drone only happens when I have my foot on the gas to keep a constant speed.

I will drive it more over the next few days and report back.

smell, for the most part, goes away after the first few days and is pretty much unnoticeable thereafter. I agree that it is sort of interesting that you have a lot of drone. The only time I drone is if I'm on the highway and the peddle is kept constant like yours, but I'm catless and have a res. delete and the drone isn't bad at all. I'de like to see your report back after a few days of driving it. enjoy

Hey Drew,

The guy was breaking my chops via multiple PMs asking to buy the damn thing off me before I even had it. Hence the ":D" in his post.

I picked it up in the Marketplace myself 2 weeks ago. So I saved some cash and I am not looking to sell it.

Thanks for chiming in though.

It really seems to be this way. Sarcastic and obnoxious people have no room for error while posting to Internet forums. Its so hard for that sly humor to get through.

And then there is this...

Still smells after about 200 miles. The Akrapovic DP was used. I took it to my mechanic to look it over. He said that the exhaust smells rich at the tail pipes.

Any advice?

I would think that a rich smell at the tail pipes might be normal since you removed a 400+ CEL factory Cat an replaced it with a 100CEL Cat. A high flow cat is just that high flow meaning it may not burn off a much of the unused fuel/whatever is in the exhaust.

yeah i second that. most cars come running just a hair rich from the factory, no? I mean very slightly but the lack of the big cat allows it to come out the tail pipes. With the catless downpipe, you can really smell it.

The direct injected cars don't run rich during normal use. Under heavy acceleration, they do run richer than Stoich, but not to the point that you would be smelling the car. It's that the cats in the aftermarket dp is not very efficient.

what you're smelling probably won't go away now. the initial burn off, especially a used pipe is gone. What you smell is the exhaust not being filtered as much by a hi flow cat

But I rode with someone in their JCW for 20 minutes with NO cat at all and no tune and it did not smell like this.

Plus there is white smoke coming from the exhaust and the engine bay.

Could the cat on this thing be bad and that is what is causing this problem?

Something doesn't sound right for sure. When I replaced mine, all I noticed was improved sound and slight performance gain (maybe). Never any smoke or weird smell.

That is what I would assume too. The guy that did the work... all he does is custom exhausts. He told me that there were no exhaust leaks.

I am confused.

Do you see any codes? If you're tuned is it possible to revert to the stock tune to see if there's a difference?

Although none of that would explain the white smoke issue. I've heard that there is a slight smell from catless or 100 cell DPs, but this seems beyond a slight smell.

Bring it to a different exhaust place to check for leaks. You shouldn't have smoke coming from the engine bay.

I am bringing it in to Prestige MINI on Thursday.

The problem is the exhaust guy says that its all buttoned up. And the rest is not his problem.

Jan is a great guy in person or on the phone but via email all you really get out of him is yes and no answers. I should just give him a call.

Let's see what Prestige comes back with. I have a great relationship with my Service Adviser and a recently renewed good relationship with the Service Manager.

Its gotta be something simple or a coincidence with something else doing this at the same time.

I thought it was that the oil catch can got full and overflowed back into the system.

I am seriously done with mods after this last one.

For the guys that did the res delete how do you deal with the drone at highway speeds?

Do you know exactly where the smoke is coming from? Top, middle, or bottom of the downpipe?

Maybe it's this: http://www.motoringfile.com/2012/01/...fecting-79000/

"How can you tell if this is happening to your MINI? The first tip-off will be a plastic burning smell, or burning and/or smoke from the front of the vehicle may be noticed."

I was just going to post the above. Sounds too ironic considering the timing but hey...you never know.

I thought about that too but its the same smell as what is coming out of the tail pipe.
