Drivetrain Engine Swap Question
Engine Swap Question
Real quick can you put a non S block into a S car and swap over everything to make it a supercharged motor? I know it's weird question but just wasn't sure if the two motors are interchangable with a parts swap.
Right but are the outsides the same?
The reason I am asking is that we got an engine from a salvager and everything bolted up but something isn't right. So i was wondering without pulling the entire motor apart was there a way to tell if a block is a S or non S engine.

+1 on internals. Supercharged motors have a forged crank, crack-forged connecting rods, and forged pistons. The block may be the same, but all internals would have to be moved over. The pistons are also dished to get a base compression of 8.3:1, which allows for the application of boost. Regular MINI pistons generate 10.6:1 compression.

Whether the combo would work or not, I think the question is; caqn it be bolted together and "look" right.
In which case, I think so. The heads, intakemani, and exhaust mani are interchangeable. Yes there are differences in specs and such, but things bolt up.
The engine block *should* have a VIN on it, which would reveal any info you may be missing.

A few easy things to look at....look at the bolts where the thermostat/housing was/should have been connected to on an S.....were they are rust filled? I think he water pump/thermostat on the regular mini in on the side of the block next to the accessory belt....on the S it on the far side.... How about the the SC bolt holes....were the holes were clean?...if they have never had a bolt inserted in them since it was cast....you have a r-50 block.
The VIN # check would be pretty fool proof if you can find the stamped #.

Even if you can bolt the non "S" engine block into, there 2 different PNs, 1 "S", 1 Cooper for the block. Could be undrilled mounting bosses, main bearing bore....

11117520126 = "S"
