Sorry to say that I have figured it out: drive the speed limit on public roads! Now, private roads are another matter altogether........

The other things I'm thinking about are bigger brakes and an adjustable rear sway bar, neither of which would mess w/ the engine...

fms,
Don't bother with bigger brakes unless you are going to track the car hard and are having brake failure due to overheating. One of the after-market's biggest scam jobs is "big brake kits." Bigger brakes cannot stop the car faster, all they can do is reduce fade in high heat track conditions.

Bigger brakes don't stop the car faster because the limiting factor in braking capacity is the tire/road grip. If your stock brakes can get into the ABS (lockup the tires if you didn't have ABS), then an aftermarket kit can't do any more (afterall, you can't lockup the brakes more, once they are locked they are locked).

It's like using a small hammer or a sledge hammer to break an egg. You can't break an egg *more* with a bigger hammer.

As for the Dinan kits, they're not out yet. Where did you hear "they weren't that good...?"

I heard it from some M3 and M5 racers...They have some experience in BMW mods, not in fluff
