Drivetrain So how much power do you think it will all be worth?
As everybody like me (who has spent all their free time wrenching on somthing in the garage since they where 8) knows there are plenty of things you can do to make your car do what it does better, some are free, others cost a boat load. You just need to know basic concepts of how things work and you will find lots of things the factory engineeres left out, or skimped on, that can make a few ponies.
If you are just doing basic modds a custom tune from any number of companies will go a long way. What I am trying to do has been tried by a few people and is not widely publicised, you need to really know what you are doing to switch fuel types and make more power efficently, and that makes it neccisary to be able to tune my own car(or have one of my tuner friends do it). What I recomend to you Joe is, do the pulley(worth its weight in gold) and have someone like Jan, or Mynes set you up with a custom remote tune after you get the plug gap just right, and whatever other little tweaks you can find. Both mods are fairley cheap and do wonders for performance.
Plus it is way easyer than trying to learn to properly tune a car.

Mynes used to be a few miles from here, but bugged out for SoCal a while back. I'd just like the ability to look at what it was doing stock and post-tune, to see where they changed stuff, and perhaps tweak things a bit for life in the frying pan.... Budgets. Meh....
FWIW, I've been tweaking mechanical stuff since the early '70s, when I was 6. My dad was a mechanic at that time, and had a garage full of tools. Sadly, my kid has shown *zero* interest in learning how to work on stuff. He's 25 and hasn't got a clue how to fix *anything*....

Hey Joe a good I/C sprayer can be had for about $10.00(and the loss of your rear window sprayer.
All you really need to do is get a garden sprinkler from your local hardware store, tap some washer/vac hose to the rear washer line from the pump, run it under the heat barier under the hood, drill a hole small enough to squeese the sprinkler into in the black plastic for the hood scoop, and pop the sprinkler in place.
To spray the intercooler just hit the switch for the rear washer, it looks totaly stock and works as good as any sprayer you can buy.
I have this done on my car and use it all the time, just dont forget to check your washer fluid.
As for your son, I have no clue maby beat him with a wrench.
Hopefully if there are any grand children you can convert them back to the car guy side of life

There's a bazillion gajillion of 'em in the local junkyards--one has to be the right size and shape to tuck away somewhere under the hood. Probably won't need the rear washer until rainy season hits again, but it *does* need it, and there's a lot of empty airspace in the cowl area that could be put to use.... The #1 question is whether misting into the air flowing around the IC will do as well as spraying heavier, wetting the IC and letting the water evaporate off of it. I'll have to see what I can dig up on some of the existing designs and figure out which they're doing....
The other question is will either work as well as injecting water-methanol into the intake somewhere--perhaps spraying a heavy mist onto the air filter so that the filter can act like a swamp cooler pad and chill the air the engine's drawing in. I've had just water in a swamp cooler get the house down into the upper 50s when it's 110 outside on a really dry day, so I know that evaporation works (and that it's all about exposing the max amount of surface area of the water to the airflow, so the air filter seems like a good place to do this
), and water-meth is supposed to be more effective and adds the octane boost as well.... Hmmm.....

Ok, meth/water with a tune = win
big IC in Az for day time use = fail, cool nights = maybe
Alta diverter w/sprayer w/OE IC = good, w/ice = real good, dry ice = even better
Use of combo wrench w/son = fail, use of virtual combo wrench w/son "grand theft auto" = maybe
The BIGGEST issue is underhood heat, especially in the SW, more so in SW w/elevation. Looking at the heat & how to control it will gain some power w/o spending big bucks. Boxing the radiator helps - M7 diverter helps..there's a lot to look at - the bad, everything under the hood is a heat generator - big time.
Joe, how far are you from SW dragway? If you're not far, it would be worth the time to go & see what kind of cooling solutions the AA/F use - No you will not use these on a Mini...BUT.... Bonus = a good time will be had by all

I still havent been able to find much info on the "Sniper reflash tool"
but I havent had much time to look either. Hopefully I can find the info that I am looking for soon, I am running out of the cheaper items on my master list to order.
I wish that I knew what software all the big tuners are using to crack into the ECU.
If I had that and a good base map the rest of the tuning would go reletively easy.
I will be ordering my RMW shorty at the end of the week, I already bought 2 50 foot rolls of DEI Titanium header wrap to cover the header and re wrap my exahust.
The titanium wrap is good to spikes of 2000 degrees and will continuously insulate up to 1800 degrees, keeping all the heat in the pipes and out of my engine bay.
Hopefully I will still be able to see the internals of the cat on the RMW glow like a brake light at night.

A while back before this thread fell off the map, I promised that I would post a better pic of my exahust when I got back up to Baghdad. Well I'm here and here you go, taken right after it was finished 15 minutes before instalation.
Nothing short of a 3" pipe with no muffler will out flow this baby, but this sounds WAY better.

. That sucker must me amazingly loud. I tried a catless dual 3" Burns stainless muffler system a couple years back and that was so bad the wife and I had ear plugs in on the way to AMVIV.That system lasted a week
.LB
Ya its a little loud (expetialy wilh no sound deadening goo left in the car) but I'm still young, and deaf from all the sterio compititions in highschool, my shooting hobby, 2 tours in Iraq, and all the other loud stuff ive worked/been around. It might be a little much when the RMW shorty goes on when I get home this time.
If it is I can always build something quieter
Hey Rick, keep checking in.....sombody needs to check...
Got ot go with LB, loud gets old quick. It's BEEN PLAYED.
We use to have loud bikes that would park outside our place of business, 106 SSs', 120 Revtechs', with straight pipes - that made NO POWER, what's the f'en point, pipes. Getting mortered in SEA was quieter especially when you have a pocket protector crowd ( they wear earplugs ) of about 60 bikes. Bottom line, if you need to travel any distance, YOU DO HEAR THE NOISE, DRONE beyond belief - even on a bike ( might be worse on a bike ).
Dr Phil made something, it's on this site somewhere, that works well - diffinately worth a look.... he did a very nice job.
There's pleanty of good stuff to look at that will bring a BIG smile to your face that IS just the right loud.

I've driven from Denver CO. to Nashville TN. with this exahust and it really isnt bad, it gets quieter if I throw a 50 pound duffell bag on the rear floor to keep it from vibrating, and roll the windows down a minimum of 2 inches, I dont know why but it helps.
It is nowehere near as loud as some of my friends V8's and Hondas, or my Samurai (but it only has a half of a glass pack on 2 feet of 2 1/4 and the Thorley header).

Here's the straight exhaust thread:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...t-exhaust.html
Lots of photos from over the years, including my setup (multiple versions--I don't actually think my last one is there.) Check out what Partsman did--looks to be clean, relatively quiet and uses R56 parts with slight modification.

Well I finaly got my RMW shorty orderd,
after a long drawn out week of dealing with my credit card company(evedently they noticed that it was geting MAXED OUT and payed off a little too much per month for their liking, and they put a B.S. 7 day hold on the card so they could investigate.)
Anywho, YOU guys did it, I decided not to get into tuning my own car for right now. Unfortuneatly I wont be running E-gas when I get home, I decided to hold off and do a lot more research and get some first hand experiance doing it first, before I go and blow up my engine.
So the car still needs tuned,
The solution: Listen to the OLD FOLKS, no not those old folks who drive walkers around the nursing home, but listen to YOU.
I have been in contact with Jan the man and I'm geting a tune in a can.(WOW I made that one rhyme better than I thought
) Since I cant get the car on a dyno while I am half a world away this seems like a logical route to go. When I get the car on a dyno, after the months of build time that is going to happen trying to install $14K YES $14,000 in parts in my garage, if Im not happy enough with the amount of power I will send him the data and re-tune it, bringing my cost back up to the Uni Chip's level of cost(NO BIGGIE I WAS GOING TO SPEND IT ANYHOW). This shuld hold me over until I can tune E85 good enough to do it myself, and I find some affordable tuning software. I KNOW its a long shot on 93 octaine at 6000 ft but I would like to see my 230HP goal, but 215HP will suffice.
All this should get on my orderd list after May 1st, if the VIKINGS dont make off with my money again.

Hey Rick, how's sand & heat treating you?
Plan B, looks GREAT. Jans remote should/work VERY well.
215 hp is NOT that hard to do. The software deal, self tune, don't count on seeing anything any time soon. Once you have the RMW tuning device - you may change your mind - self tune.
Stay out of trouble.....

No Fish it doesnt mean Ive given up, it just means that I have more learning to do before doing it. I need to find affordable software that WORKS, a higher volume fuel pump (some people know and wont say where to get one), and I also would like to get a little more experiance actually tuning, before I blow up my current motor prematurely.
My E85 plan WILL be a reality in time, and I will make it work better than petrolium based gas, the potential is there I just dont have all the answers YET.

Speak up private a SUPERIOR IS ASKING !!STRIKE THAT~~TELLING. You tell ME & I'll have an answer ON our Monday ! Today IS sat / 24th~there its what ? next tues morning in june or ?? As far as the tuning__buy a NINJA suit (bet you've got one that no longer fits) AND go at NIGHT IN the friggin snow and tune cars till they have to quit towin em. Otherwise (for now) put ALL your "effecting" goodies together and just "gitter dun" I TRULLY believe YOU will prevail in this area !! It's just at WHAT /WHOSE (?) expense ?? You need a "SUGAR DADDY" My ENZO & Steves "10" won't allow for our participation in this portion of your "endeavor". Fish, I'm looking for a Walbro 255lph in tank(or if there is anything comprible, OH and the louder the better). If anybody has the info please post I have tried and failed, asked and been denied, looked and lost, searched and, well you get the idea.
I'm not going to need this kind of fuling power now but, when the DEATH ROCKET becomes a reality it is one less thing to forget to buy. I know you have probibly been keeping up with LB's 1.8 build up, Jan the magic man stated that he could have pushed the tune harder but, the fuel system was maxed out. Yes I know 351HP, but it is on 91 pump gas, E-gas you need 30-40% more and it needs to get pumped and supplyed from somewhere. It will probibly MAX out a stock pump pretty quick just like converting an EVO. Most of the Japaneese muscle where I come from is also running 1600cc injectors, to get their motor tanked on the god ole grain, NOT a reality with ihe MINI YET. But having a big whiney pump on board isnt going to hurt anything right now, that is what tunes and pressure regulators are for(Plus I LOVE the way they sound, another insturment in my mechanical orchistra
)
As for the NINJA tuning, WOW the visuals that came to mind!!!
(I think I peed myself
), (NOPE where GOOD
). I will probably spend a LOT more time at Tobz's shop tuning EVO's and WRX'es to get a good feel for what I am doing. NOT finding an unlocked car at Walmart and hookin Granny up with a tune.
And lastly the TAN, WELL with all the stupid rules that go into a war theese days, I normaly only have about a half an inch of exposed skin so I am working on a good birth-mark looking tan.
What I would only give for my tour in 2003 back, now that was a war.

Good idea however, I tried them back in february. They where the first that I tried to go through, I rememberd seing it on their web sight when they sold their twin charge kit. Anyhow I got a responce back saying they had verry few laying around but wont sell them unless you have all the mod's they feel are nessisary, or you have a Twin charge kit with a bad pump.
I tried getting the name of their original distributer(I know Alta dosent make them themselves) but no luck, I would asume that being an off spur of Perrin Performance (BIG time EVO/WRX tuning parts company) they adapted or cross matched a Walbro unit to work with the MINI, but a little help (a part number) would have been nice.
I also tried Chad at Detroit Tuned, and he was stumped, its like nobody ever adressed this area of the MINI's performance. Theese parts are normaly ones I take care of first, Fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator(adjustable), fuel rail, and even the filter, and nothing is avalible for the MINI.(VENDORS take note/ see failed fuel pump threads, make a solution?)
One thing Sport Compact Car, Magazine did with their Focus project a long while back is, remove the on pump "sock" filter and replaced it woth one off of a Mustang to get a little more flow. It evedently worked, UNTIL they found out they could use a Mustang Cobra pump in the car with no problems.
I wish it was that easy for us.

^ exactly...
Dinan had a Mini upgrade - pump + presure reg. Complaints about the pump noise was, possibly, the reason it was discontinued.
There is NOTHING SPECIAL about the pump that you coulden't mod for your app. If you need a source....they're easy to find, but I have a local ( more $$$ ).
