Any muffler shop can do it. You're just cutting the exhaust tubing in two places, removing the resonator and then re-connecting the two cut ends with a short length of bent tubing. There are also online vendors that make a pre-bent section of tubing to re-connect the cut ends, which makes it even easier.

This may be a ridiculously stupid question, but would it be even remotely street legal to leave just the resonator, removing the muffler completely?

Also, a buddy of mine who knows quite a bit about motorcycles said the one-ball might mess with back pressure, causing the engine to throw a code (unless the ECU automatically adjusts for such things, which wouldn't surprise me). Obviously motorcycles and cars are different, and removing only the resonator versus removing the muffler is different, so I need someone to get me educated so I can talk "apple to apple" about this stuff.

I did this on the car last week without telling the Wife. Spent $30 and 30 minutes of my time and took it to my local guy, Rod.

It sounds GREAT, shaves about 25lbs. off the backend and is the cheapest, noticeable mod for the money.

It doesn't hurt anything and won't throw any codes.

When I had mine done a couple of weeks ago, the muffler man thought that the muffler was first and the resonator was second. When I said I wanted to cut out the resonator, he made a comment that he wouldn't be able to get the pipes out the back to look as good as the did. Evidently, he thought he would have to relocate the two pipes from the muffler on the left to the resonator on the right. I pointed out he would simply have to cut here and here and install an elbow. He said "OK, but I cant say what it will sound like."
It didn't take him long, and it sounds great.

I had an idea for the oneball mod that adds a little bit to the price and may make a bigger difference.

I was thinking of having the muffler replaced with a moroso spiral-flow muffler. I have one on my Saturn and I like it a lot. It's got the low-end rumble but doesn't get raspy in the upper rpms.

Does anyone know how long the stock muffler is? The spiral-flows are about 18" long but only weigh about 5 lbs. I can imagine you'd get more weight reduction there.

The problem is that the stock muffler doesn't have the inlet and outlet on opposite ends like most aftermarket units, and there's not a lot of room under the back for extra piping. You would have to go with a *very* short muffler in order to have room for a 90° bend from the muffler outlet over to the center of the rear valence where the stock tips go.

I did something similar to what you're talking about on my car - replaced all of the piping from the cat back with 2.5" tubing, and just had a single small muffler where the stock muffler was. If I remember correctly, the muffler I used was only about 10" X 10" X 4", and the setup ended up being too loud for my tastes, so I went back to stock.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the stock muffler?? Some of the aftermarket exhausts have a single muffler back there. It might require a little bit of extra work to get it to fit though. Nothing a good exhaust shop can't handle. I just don't know if I can go any other route but moroso.

You don't want to be one of "those" guys do ya?

Those mufflers are for race applications. They offer very little reduction in noise. You would be better off getting a Magnaflow muffler installed with some custom 2.5" tubing.

I've been running a side-exit exhaust on my saturn with the moroso spiral-flow muffler and it really isn't that loud. I was quite surprised at the amount of noise reduction past 4k rpm. In the Saturn you can't hear the exhaust at all after 4500 rpm... it's all engine noise from the CAI.

You're probably thinking it sounds similar to one of those coffee can mufflers that newbs put on their civics and cavaliers. It's definitely not though.

I'm curious to see what it will sound like on a MINI.

Got the one ball mod done to my 08 S convertible about 3 weeks ago now. Cost $60 at my local exhaust shop in Portland, OR (message me if you want the shop details). The guy knew straight away when I pulled out the diagram and knew his stuff. He said the convertible was a bit different due to the bracing, but it still didn't cost much or take much time.

I have to say I'm happy with it. It's subtle but there - I can hear it, but my wife didn't know anything had changed until I pointed it out to her! It's a bit "boomier" on start-up (but then it's in a small garage), and overall has a better sound - louder but no drone, and definitely not "ricey". Makes you want to drive faster!

Haven't noticed any performance gains - which is what I was expecting from reading the posts here.

Thoroughly recommended - low cost, doesn't take long, add's a "beefier" sound.

The One Ball is the first thing I did to my 04. I got it done for 30bucks here in Waco tx. Don't expect it to be much louder but the burble is definitely more pronounced. Although for whatever reason when its 100 degrees plus I dont really hear it at all... Like the previous posters said its definetly worth the money considering aftermarket exhausts are 1000 easy barely add any power. Not saying the One Ball adds anything, but at least it become much more audible and deeper!

All in all well worth it!

Anyone know a spot in Atlanta? All the shops I have gone to are saying "Custom exhausts start at $300" Even when I show them a diagram, pictures and explain to them how simple it is to do.

Did you take the car with you and show them?

I had the same issue with a couple of shops around here, but as soon as they saw the car and saw how simple the mod was they did it with no hassle and low cost.

Hi, I am new to NAM. I just bought an '05 MCS with 61k miles 2 weeks ago. What a great car! I have spent many hours reading up on mods from the forum. I am very impressed with the info I found on this forum. I have already started my first mod with a Dinan STB. My next mod is the one-ball mod followed by CAI, 15% pulley, RSB, Koni yellow and springs, 15" wheels for lower unsprung weight, and eventually a custom tune.

My immediate question is whether there is a little more gain by using 2.5" pipe all the way from cat back to the stock muffler than just a 90 degree elbow with the stock pipe? Has anyone tried using 2.5" pipe for the one-ball mod?

does anyone know if there is a difference in the r53 exhaust between manual vs automatic transmissions?

i had a 1 ball mod with fresh piping and recently removed it. i now have the whole cat-back, (and also stock exhaust manifold and cat) for sale.

my car is a manual transmisson. wondering will my pre-cut piping/muffler fit on cars with automatic transmission just the same?
