Quieting Alta 3" exhaust suggestions

I have a 3" Alta exhaust with their header. Its does sound freeking awesome.. but i need to quiet it down a bit. (min 15db - 25 would be great).

I have been looking into resonators but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a resonator as I am sure most of you know about space restrictions?

Was looking here:
http://www.roadraceengineering.com/exhaustparts.htm

I called them on the phone and he suggested getting the longest resonator i can fit.. but possibly even changing out the 'muffler' to a Magnaflow. But that would change the sound. and i do like the sound.. i just want to quiet it it down some.

Thanks for any input on this.

You have one of the quietest exhausts already....soooo I dunno what to tell ya.

Don't change the muffler to a Magnaflow, it will be much louder than the Alta.

How are you measuring your db? PS are you sure you have a 3 inch exhaust? I know we sell a 3 inch for the R56 but not the R53.

OOPS nevermind. I see you bought this back in 08 when we did sell one. Found your post from 08 when you were asking the same question lol

Pf.. you're probably **** outta luck. Do you still have your rear seat installed? Removing it sure opens up the exhaust concert in the back. You're going to have a hell of a time finding something big enough that will fit under the R56.

Like Thumper just said, don't switch to the Magnaflow resonator, my custom Exhaust depot full exhaust consists of 2 magnaflow resonators.

They were great at first but it didn't take long to burn out the fiberglass, now they're just too loud.

I just pulled one and installed a Dynamax muffler in the rear. It's much quieter (still would like it quieter) but at least it's not annoying.

I can't seem to find the specs on the 3" R53 exhaust. I would recommend going to a local exhaust shop and have them put your car on the lift and see what resonator they could fit up there. PS don't forget ANY resonator/muffler you put on your car WILL change how the exhaust sounds.

I am going to do some measurement on the exhaust this weekend. I will also try to find the install docs as well. as far as a resonator changing the sound that sucks. The sound of that ALTA header/catback is awesome! (just about 25db too loud) BUT MAN!! its a beast!!! I love it!

I mean you can try it but I think it will be too loud.

Tell you what....

About 30 seconds ago, I just got a new JCW stage I kit in for a friend. Since I'm buying his exhaust, I've got mine here.

Before I put the JCW kit on, I'm going to take out the resonator and try a larger one that I pulled from an Acura.

If you want, you're more than welcome to have the Magnaflow resonator and see if it works.

Lemme know.

That is a nice offer.... but if you think that me putting a resonator in line with my exhaust will be louder than it already is.. then i suppose its doing the opposite of what i need it to do?

Installing a resonator will not make your car louder. I would ONLY get a 3" inlet/outlet resonator as to keep the piping the same diameter and not to restrict flow.

No, I'm sorry... it's 2.5.

I agree with Jarid, I wouldn't drop a half inch... that's too much.

Sorry, wasn't using my entire brain.

On the bright side, if you try a larger 5" diameter resonator, it will quieten down the exhaust.

I installed a 5" resonator yesterday and it COMPLETELY quitened down my exhaust.

I took a stock one off an '08 Acura...

HTH's,

Mark
