Drivetrain Quieting Alta 3" exhaust suggestions
On a scale of 1-10 with 6 being loud enough to sound great but just a hair to loud, I'd say it dropped it down to a 4. (with 1 being bone stock quiet)

I am in Heidelberg and we love it!
Any thoughts on something like this:

Hopefully someone can chime in and offer a solution to your predicament as I'm in the same boat. I recently had my aftermarket exhaust replaced with a 3" custom catback and mine drones excessively at highway speeds around 3k RPM. The place that did my exhaust had initially given me two mufflers (or perhaps a resonator and muffler) and they just installed two smaller mufflers closer to the tailpipes and it still hasn't resolved the issue. I'm starting to wonder whether it's an issue with the OEM header as I also had my Megan header swapped back to the OEM one due to an exhaust leak at the flex joint. Could the difference in diameter cause my problem?

Man I'm sorry, I never got notification that someone responded...
Anyway, the length of the resonator is roughly 14-15" (the body of it)

The larger the diameter of the piping, the more droning and louder it's going to get. As well, the farther away the mufflers are away from the engine/headers, the less effect it will have on "muffling" sound. You need a resonator or put in a reducer pipe in the middle to get rid of the droning. On a stock head, 3" piping is way too big...your engine just isn't pushing that much air through.
That's why when I put the 2.5" inlet/outlet resonator, it quietened the exhaust dramatically.
Of course, the 5" diameter resonator didn't hurt...

Just wanted to update that I finally corrected my droning issue and I couldn't be happier. After some research about droning, I came across a product called "CC Insert" by CarChemistry. Initially I had some speculation over whether the product would work, but after visiting several forums and reading people's experience, I decided to contact the manufacturer. The owner of the site, Ken, responded back promptly and answered all my questions and gave me the confidence that the insert just might correct my problem. So I ordered the part and had it installed yesterday. Well that's probably the best $55 I spent in a long while. The drone is almost completely gone and I'm finally able to motor on the highway without wearing ear plugs! Sounds ridiculous, I know, but I started to get a headache anytime I drove on the highway... not to mention the added vibration I'd feel, similar to sitting in one of those massage chairs at the high setting.
As far as the sound, I'd say it's the best of owning an aftermarket exhaust setup and still having the livability of a stock exhaust. One thing I want to note is my custom exhaust is built around 2.5" tubing and not 3" as I originally suspected. Unfortunately I never took an audio sample inside the cabin, but my friend and I measured the drone to be approximately 95dB on his iPhone. Now I understand that's not exactly an ideal measuring device, but it definitely seemed probable. Just to clarify, we did do an initial measurement with the car off as a baseline, but I don't recall what it read at... regardless, we saw a noticeable increase when driving, especially around 3k RPM.

I recommend checking out their little tech section that explains how they work, it's definitely a worthwhile read.
