Horrible noise coming from pulley/engine

I've had a 15% pulley fitted and new belt which originally I had a belt fitted which was too big and so there was a horrible clattering noise coming from the belt tensioner.

I have now had the recommended small belt fitted and when I picked it up it was fine.

I drove the car for about 100miles and everything was great. When I got home I left the car for about 5hrs to then start up to this noise.

I've had a new tensioner fitted so it can't be that.

Please can anyone explain to me what this noise is??

Is the noise the same, before & after the belt & tensioner change?

It sounds like a piece of the belt seperated and it's slapping. If this is NOT the problem, it's not good.

I agree on the belt. Noise doesn't have the metal on metal sharp clack. Sure hope that's the problem. Keep us informed.

Any updates?

Although it could be a belt flap as mentioned above, how would the separated/broken belt go through the upper pulley and the tensioner arm since the gap is very small. I may be wrong but it could also be internal. It sounds exactly the same as pontiac fiero I had with a bad crankshaft bearing. I hope not this is not the case for you. Good luck!

Could it also be a bad crank pulley? (Pulley separating from the harmonic damper?)

It sure is. I had a lightweight crank pulley shatter on me . It started out to be like bad pulley bearing then it came off center causing it to wobble and clank . Get yourself a new ATI Super Damper Crank Pulley

Im going through this right now. The tensioner dampner has two bushings on each end that suck a big donkey (lets just call it a pancake) my spring is all good I can see almost the full hole. its not just sound though the lack of those bushings are undermining your dampner and making the belt skip im sure and this will make it have wear spots and prematurely fail. Im about to try powerflex replacements for the two bushings on the tensioner to see if it helps.

Any Updates.
My car has the same issue. I took it in for service after the car started eating the side of the belt. The dearlership ended up replacing the pulley and crank pulley. Eveything was fine initially then started with this noise that you have a few days later.
I had a mechanic look at it and he said that the pulley may not have been aligned correctly. He aligned it for me and it worked good for a little while and now the problem is back.

pop the hood and look at the tensioner if its shaking a bunch thats the problem it will do this even if you have a full hole showing. Have you had any non dealer work done that required the belt off mabye they didnt have the tool and messed up the dampner on the tensioner? Id like to think the dealer would catch a bad tensioner though.

Well it could be any one of the parts touching the belt. But I'd first check to make sure the pulley is on correctly. Then I'd check those bushings on the tensioner, if they are cracked or mushroomed I'd replace them with the powerflex supercharger damper bushings.
Then I'd check the damper, make sure it's not coming apart, and also clean the belt grooves. If you end up needing a damper the ATI damper is the way to go.
