Drivetrain Tuning options with R53?
Mini's typically dyno stock in the 150-155 range for an 05'-06' a pulley adds 15-20 hp as you are raising the boost from ~10.5 to 15-16psi. Put a JCW intake on there and go get a tune from Jan and you will see your numbers and a much larger area under the curve. And you'll be out less then $1k. If you end up wanting more throw the header, cam, injectors on there and get retuned and find about another 25-30whp.
I took my 3k mile 2008 automatic CooperS in for a 17% pulley, cam, and header. Everything else is stock except for a K&N filter in the stock airbox.
It put down 208hp at the hubs after a tune... and it was about 188hp prior to the tune.
I went 17% instead of 15% since I had the automatic and wanted to make up some of the difference between the gearboxes... looks like I'll need injectors too, but a pulley on it's own most likely won't need em.
agreed
the pully is the best bang-for-your-buck mod out there for beginners
also, be careful when saying things like "much faster evo". you have to remember, not all mini's are created equally
i may be overestimating jan's mini, but something tells me it could give the evo a run for its money on the track when he is finished with it

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound arrogant with the "much faster evo" comment. I'm just saying going crazy with the modifications on the Mini is not important to me because my other car is already pretty quick and is only getting faster.
My EVO IX is pretty lightly modded, so I'm pretty sure Jan @ RMW would own me. But it's not about being the fastest, just about having fun.
I like your attitude!
A pulley will probably get you really close to what it sounds like you are looking for. The nice thing is that you can do just a pull and basically leave it like that indefinitely (although that holds true with a lot of other "bolt on" mods for the mini).
And if you havent thought about already look at getting some camber plates, the MINI has like no camber up front in stock form. Alternatively a larger rear sway bar is consider THE suspension mod to get by most people.

How difficult is it doing a pulley swap on a Mini Cooper S?
I did one on my old Saturn Ion Redline with a Roots M45 SC. It was a pain in the *** because the snout on my S/C was deformed from the factory. It was rubbing on the pulley, so I had to file the snout down before I could install it.

Well, you wont have to break out the file to do the install. But it is not something you want to tackle alone...a buddy is almost a necessity the first time you do it. It took me 8 hrs with a friend, most people say 4 hrs. and I AM mechanically inclined. I've installed all my mods in my sig, I used to have an 99 Eclipse before my S2000 before my Mini. I did the whole big 16G, fmic, dsmlink, 660s, etc all myself. The problem with the pulley install was getting the stock one off, it just WOULD NOT come off for me...a torch would have helped a lot!
If you could do it with another Mini owner who has done it before it will be easy...but most shops charge 150-200 for install, if you have a good day job, its worth it to pay someone with experience.
The best way to tell will be to read a how to. Here is a good one,
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ey-how-to.html
Ignore the bit where he talks about heating up the Helix pulley with a torch, all of the pulleys you get not including the Helix use some sort of clamp on design.

Thanks for the how to..
Wow that looks really involved..
My old Ion Redline was simple..
Take off drive belt and pull the SC pulley off and put the new one on.
The MCS sure does involve a lot of steps.. LOL

. +1 on the just having fun too btw

i was willing to pay for my leisure time. it took eric at helix an hour by himself while i played gt4 on their playstation....woulda taken me a lot more....so i was pleased. and there are plenty other diy's to do. my fav was coilovers, the easiest was the jcw intake. happy trails!
Why tune now when down the road you'll have to tune again? Stand-a-lone ECU.
