Drivetrain Air Intake comparisons
I fyou wish to have the air pull from the front, all you have to do is the airbox mod that randy has shown how. The dyno testing was not with this mod, so you would get additional air flow from this. I have been driving with out this mod, and have not found a reason to really do it just yet. I am going to investigate what would be needed to replace the back plastic later on this month though.

Any Intake is pricey for the low gains they actually give you.
$200 for a gain of almost 5% is pricey?
I can see that you have never struggled to make horsepower with small motors.
I'll take that deal all day long and twice on Sundays.
I know people that would pay thousands of dollars for a 7 horsepower increase.
Hey Randy;
Great info. Its what people need to make informed decisions.
I liked to know what you got for info on the Cooper?
Intake aswell as exhaust.
I hope to do some AutoCross would like to hear your opion on suspension.

To be dead honest, the Cooper doesn't have near as much wiggle room to make performance gains like the S does. I would either do the Mania full replacement unit, seen here:

or just replace the factory element with a higher flowing unit, like this:

I need to update my website, because after numerous dyno tests, the most we seem to be able to get out of an intake on the Cooper is around 5 horsepower. The Viper Pipercross kit and the Mini Mania units seem to be the most efficient. You can get more than that on the dyno if you run the car at a colder temp after you install the filter (which is where our error was in the numbers). Once you geta data logger and see where the temps are, it is much easier to control everything and get accurate results. All of the numbers for the S intakes in this thread were attained that way - monitoring the temps.
For Exhaust systems on the Cooper, I like a few out there, buit again, the Cooper stock system isn't as convoluded as the S, so the gains aren't as dramatic. You should be happy with a 4-5 horsepower gain on the Cooper from an exhaust system. The RSpeed and Helix are the big performers. I like the Helix Cooper system and recommend that for hp junkies.

For autocrossing, the biggest consideration is the rules. Which class, or did you just want to drive? If you don't mind being thrown into a non-competetive class, there is a ton to do. If you want to stay in H-Stock in SCCA, there is very little you can do.
Class not a consideration, I would do the rear swaybar (there was just a write up here ), some camber plates, Koni adjustables and some H-Sport springs. That is full tilt (other than coilovers), and you could start out smaller with just the rear bar.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Randy
