Drivetrain Garrett chip "very close"
I talked to Eric @ Helix13 today as he was running various prototype GIAC chips through the paces on their dyno. Knowing what GIAC did for my 1.8T Audi, and what they do with Porsches, I'm wringing my hands waiting for this chip.
Eric said that it will be serial programmed and eventually make owner-tuned options such as valet mode (lend the car to your crazy brother and it only goes 55). The chip will be specific to the car it goes into, i.e. 15% pulley with exhaust.

Yeah I'm dying for this. I've been calling Eric 3x a week for the past 3 or 4 weeks. I actually recently called 3 times in a span of 4 days. I've got to stop now and let him work on this chip tuning! I was told about 3 weeks or so. I'll call him again in a week and a half (if I can wait that long!)
I just checked out GAIC's web site and it looks interesting. They have a feature where you get a key fob type of thing that will allow you to swith between programmings. The valet mode limits both the top speed as well as the rpms (**** someone off by limiting it to 3000 RPMS
)
Anyone have any idea on what's involved with the install? What happens when you further mod your car? It sounds great, I'd just like to be able to fine tune it myself as well as having their stock tune's.

Now all they need to do is release the ECU upgrade at the same price they charge for the rest of the makes (instead of twice as much like some companies). Some companies are charging as much as $700, that's just dumb. I had my Jetta done for $350 including eveything, problem is that company doesn't yet make software for the MINI.
We're looking at the $350 range for the Cooper and about $500 for the S. The prices are not final, so don't hold me to it but that's the range that we are looking at. We have done sixteen dyno runs on 4 different files today with very promising results. Another one is on the way as we speak. This process will take a little while. One thing that I'm trying to find is the upper pressure limit of the MAP sensor. Anybody know that? -Eric
What? Well, -
Why am I so excited?
I am going to jail. I'm a-goin' downtown...
Yep. I'm going to jail!

nothing like a little free-market competition...though why is the S more than the Coop?
I appreciate your fine tuning skills...the pulley taunts me from the distance...

It seems like EVERYTHING costs more on the S. But I think the reason here is there is only so much you can do to tune the Cooper. So I think R&D wise, the Cooper is pretty easy. I think with the whole supercharger deal, there may be more computer stuff going on that has to be figured out, written and tested.
Just my guess....
Oh...HELIX RULES!

I think Greatgro is probably right - I don't expect to see as much gain on my Cooper as you MCS guys will. But if I can get some more torque down low and a bit more muscle, I'll take it. Seems pretty cheap compared to an exhaust, wheel / tire package.

My Jetta was a turbo, why it would need less R&D than the SC 1.6L... Who knows? But if you shop around you can find almost any other make's ECU software available for under $400. I do expect the MCS will eventually make it's way into that range. And nothing against helix here... if anything they are leading the pack with the price drop and that's what competition is all about.

From what I understand, GIAC doesn't jujst remap a few parameters leading to increases in power at WOT. GIAC remaps the entire ECU with regards to engine management. It will optimize all aspects of engine tuning - many areas that most tuners wouldn't dare touch. Now what does that mean to us? Honestly, I have no idea but it sounds very exciting!
