Shift Cables R&R

Well, I dropped one of the shift cable ends off of my Craven shifter for the last time. This time I had to call AAA and be towed home.

So, in the past two times this has happened it was because of the same Tire shop Mech. rough handling the shifter looking for reverse and the cables somehow binding and the end falling off the shifter stem. I thought he would have learned his lesson last time, but then I guess I didn't learn my lesson by letting him drive again onto the racks.

I ordered two new shifter cables form Classic (the best, and with a great discount for NAMers, might as well replace them both) and find that you are supposed to use a special tool to remove the cable ends from their attachment at the transmission end.

Any idea if these are absolutely necessary or am I going to ruin something by removing them by sheer leverage?

Thanks for your help.

its very easy, just look at the spring clips they just need to be squeezed with pliers as for getting the cable off the shaft on the trans use a small pry bar.
If you have a early car before 05 i think i hope you got the later model cables with better ends.

Wait, What? Aluminum ends instead of the plastic ones - hadn't heard that one yet. What's the deal, is that the better part for this repair?

I know Paul's car is a 2002.

Yea dont use leverage... i uses a small flat bar thinkin the same thing and popped both of the rubber bushings... not a smart thing to do because than you need the whole cable which involves dropping exhaust and bottom of gear box to access... and removing the other two ends... haha...

Listen...you cant give ANYONE advice until your car is RUNNING.... Use an open ended wrench. like a 12mm and wedge it in there and pry up. That's how I did mine last month. Worked like a charm...and no breakage...

UKSUV's got it!

I used a 9/16" wrench to pry the sockets off of the *****. Start with the right cable and place your shifter in 1st, 3rd, or 5th to gain clearance for your tool of choice. The left cable is a piece of cake!

Pberry51mini has probably re and re'd the cables out by now though.

Gawd...this just works so well! I was funtzing w/ it for 30 min. before came across this post. Just put it gear and give em' twist w/ a 11mm opened ended wrench..thx!! I just put in on the socket and gave her a twist...bingo! The rest of the job..personally was/is a PITA IMHO...something that the 1st time takes 2-3x what it takes the 2nd

Sorry to bring it back from the dead but i did my SS install last night and i got to the gearbox in like 15 minutes but i wrenched on the Shaft cable for a good 4 Hours before bending it and i failed to even remove the reverse pivot arm ball joint i just ripped the shaft out and wiggled the alta in. I tried this method of open end wrenching but to no avail. Is there a video or diagram someone could include on the easiest way to do either joint as im going to be doing this again soon.

TIA for your help.

somebody really needs to show how they are using an open ended wrench to pop these cables off. I am bending both of them trying to get them off. Hours and still no luck...
