I've only used the JCW CAI and I love it - the benefit is that because of the flap that opens at 4500rpm, it's as quiet as stock for normal driving, and opens up to loud when you accelerate hard.

Most (all?) other CAIs are loud all the time - but then, many people prefer it that way!

There is no BEST.

You need to make list of what is important to you (sound, thermal efficiency, maintenance, appearance, and then do your research on NAM to see which ones cover your list. Any of the CAIs from the known/reputable vendors will do the job. Asking which is the best - most will tell you what they are running. . The whole point on NAM is information so you can make the best/right decision for yourself.

So - here is a good punch list.

filter - foam or paper (maintenance differences).
housing -
a) open or closed box
b) metal or plastic

these will affect - loudness and thermal efficiency, as well as, stock looking or aftermarket?

If you can get rides in other cars do so.

you think the Alta is loud, have you heard the AGS? But even that pales in comparison to this:http://videos.streetfire.net/video/3...641ce3ce56.htm

i personally have always purchased all Alta products and have never had an issue. as far as the best goes i doubt anyone here except some of the manufacturers have really R&D'd these products. anyone that tells you different is just going by personal experience. Alta 15% pulley, Alta 2% lightened crank, Alta short shifter, Alta CAI, Alta shorty antenna.

That's Webb Motorsports Prototype front mount intercooler that created that insane whine. However, you can see that the car has an alta cai.

1. JCW with flap and plug because I don't like to hear the "whistle"
2. Alta if you can bear the "whistle" then you might as well hear the glorious supercharger sound.
3. M7 ddm if you want something in between, but imho it's neither this or that.

Well, when Webb had it for sale on his site, it was going for about $2000 I think? So from what I had heard, it was removed due to lack of interest/perspective buyers.
The early version also had an issue with the couplings coming loose or tearing. this was because there was not enough play in them to accomodate the movement of the engine, fore and aft.
Last I heard, the issue was resolved with a different type of couplings.
I had also asked about possibly reintroducing this product, and was told that due to the price and lack of interest, it wouldn't be feasible to bring back.
I however would love to have one!
