Drivetrain GIAC for R56!
#78
Wish I knew more? I do know the guys at GIAC but I'm being patient and waiting for word back from them before I start badgering them, although I'm getting antsy :-) This gives me time to have the custom exhaust made to really turn the program wick up!
I was hoping that a dyno plot would have hit the site by now.

i think all these tuners are having trouble working with the r56 ecu . terry at bms posted up yesterday and it seems these cars are going to be a bugger. look what happened to fireball tim on stc and they were on tv . talk about a punch in the nadds. i bet mini and bmw are laughing at us all. the unichip only seems to work on some of the cars. so i think what they have come up with is not perfect yet. so maybe the tuning lords at giac can give us something to go on here. a lil hope and some new info on whats up.

I can attest that they have tester units up and running as I was fortunate enough to get a ride in a tester car. It had the GIAC tune, Alta intercooler and a custom TBE and, while of course it's hard to qualify gains by the seat of your pants, the car was definitely FAST Unfortunately no word on the amount of boost produced as the car didn't have a boost guage hooked up yet when I went for the ride.

We just received the flash tool--a completely new unit for the R56ers. I haven't even learned how to use it yet (our car's DME was flashed at GIAC). Give me some time and I'll figure it out, then dyno befores and afters, and post when we have numbers. Looks like we'll be flashing GIAC for R56 cars at AMVIV!

Im really sorry about the delay. We just recieved the GIAC Flashloader this week and with it the ability to flash our car between the stock and GIAC files.
As soon as we are able to we will post proper dyno charts showing the gains for the GIAC flash. This week is a bit stressed because of AMVIV, but we will do our best.

Dyno Results
Here are some dyno results for the GIAC file for the R56. These tests were conducted at two facilities: at GIAC and Helix. The tests at GIAC were on a single car, stock, with GIAC alone, and finally GIAC plus an intercooler and exhaust. They were conducted with 91 octane fuel. The test at Helix was done on a car with the Helix prototype intercooler; stock file versus GIAC, on 93 octane fuel. The engineers at GIAC made it a priority to tune the cars on pump gas with no knock. That's important, because there certainly is more boost available from the stock turbo than you see on these plots, but particularly with the stock intercooler, the car is incapable of dealing with the intake heat. We will be doing further tests here in Philly with 93 to squeeze a couple of more safe HP out of the car. The big limiting factor in R56 tuning is intake temps: the factory intercooler is a true POS. When we release our intercooler, we'll produce a custom GIAC file to make substantially more power. First the GIAC numbers:
And here are the boost levels and fuel airs from above:
Here's our shop car, already equipped with the intercooler, running stock versus GIAC tuning file. Sorry for the crappy image quality.
Because of the complication of the R56 DMEs, all cars must be bench flashed. We are in the process of building file databases as we speak. If anyone, particlarly within driving distance of Helix, would like to get involved, give us a ring, and we'll set something up.

14hp at the wheels
I think 14hp at the wheels sounds right. That is what the JCW Kit makes. The above data explains why the JCW kit only increased the flywheel hp 17hp. It is nice to see a tuner who is up front about needing a new intercooler to make safe reliable power above 20hp.
Keep up the good work
