BOV kit from HKS for R56 MCS

Hi Guys,
just saw this in the Japanese website of HKS.

I can't read japanese but it sure looks promising. Finally, some tuner has released a proper BOV for our R56 MCS.

Not, all we need to wait for is the price and if it works without messing up the AFR!

The price is listed, 57750 yen, or 537.50 at todays exchange rate. Don't know why you'd really want one, your performance would suffer with it.

How would the car loose power?

I though that by adding one, it would allow the turbo to spool up quicker by reducing the pressure built up. Can you explain why you think it would rob the car of power?

Unless you are running added boost than stock and have tuned the ecu, the car won't perform at its best. I believe Alta tried this solution and without tunning, the BOV was just a noisemaker. With several people's cars sputtering and lagging in power due to the BOV. I remmeber seeing that they worked just fine on EU spec cars due to not having a maf sensor. I'll try to find that post.

Makes sense...

Thanks, that makes sense. Is the EU spec car that much faster then the US version?

Alta makes a nice adapter to fit a universal HKS BOV on many cars; it will fit the Mini too. PM me if you want more info.

If this BOV works, how come the Forge item seel to screw up the air sensor?
Do they not do the same thing?

just because it worked fine on your VW doesnt mean it will work fine on a MINI. The bov may be the same design but the engines are completely different.

If you want that BOV sound, putting on a CAI gives you plenty of PSHHH per shift.

ghost,

So far, all the CAI's i have heard do have the PSHHHH shound, but they are more of the long term PSHHHHH, proper BOVs have a more acute PSHHHH.

thats true danielo, I think the reason is because the stock valve is a recirculating valve. Personally i would rather have the longer pshhhhh sound over the shorter pshhh or even chirp knowing that its doing my car no harm.

Im pretty sure the HKS valve will mess up the AFR because its more than likely a vent to atmosphere valve.

HKS should know their stuff. But i'll wait and see how it turns out when someone actually buys one OR when HKS finally has some english to explain the product.

But the HKS BOV kit mounts to the intake, post turbo (correct me if i'm wrong pls) and not where there the OEM valve is. Maybe that will solve the messed up air mass readings?

Konquest, Forge does have a nice item there, but it doesn't work well on the MCS. I see it as more of a universal part, not a specifically designed item for our cars.

where does the Alta adapter mount the BOV to?

To the noise maker port its behind the airbox on the hose that goes from the hard intercooler pipe to the throttle body see http://www.jscspeed.com/mini_r56/bov.htm

So does this BOV kit have any pros or cons?

It does seem more thought thru than the Forge.

Any problems w/ the OEM diverter would be because it's designed to directly recirculate into the turbo housing.

Unless you were running the Alta block off plate for the stock BOV & had ECU programming that disabled the stock bypass valve, you would be running the HKS BOV & the stock BOV together.

The stock BOV would recirculate as normal, and vent during shifts, etc. and aslo pop open for DSC, etc.

The HKS bov would open on every shift and dump air out of the system (not put it back in like the stocker) which might cause a rich condition / stumbling (although I have heard of no such problems w/ aftermarket bovs on the r56).

There is no way to recirculate the HKS on the R56, b/c there's no port on the intake (I guess you could make one, but then you'd have a 3' hose, etc.)

The HKS BOV would mount where the noisemaker goes, in the throttle body ic pipe.

I have the Forge, and I haven't had any problems. '07 MCS. What are the problems that you are talking about danielo? And it fits perfectly, so I don't really see it as a universal item. I wanted the sound and haven't had any complaints about the forge.

well, from the readings i've done regarding the Forge, it vents the air to atmosphere, instead of recirculating it back into the air intake system.

Our car's ecu is already programmed to expect this extra air, so without it, your ARF will run very rich, causing another set of issues.

keep in mind thats essentially the same deal as the HKS valve. Based on other HKS valves, this one is also VTA which will cause the same exact problems as the forge valve. The only way to circumvent this problem is to make it a full recirc valve, which would probably get rid of most of the noise making ability or to reprogram the ECU.

I love the sound of the forge! So explain to me what horrible things can happen from having it on there? I'm new to this stuff, so if its really bad I'll take it off.

my $.02

I think some blow off valves serve a purpose but when they are noise makers they are noise makers...........but this is by far the best sounding bov on the web right now
