Drivetrain Pipercross Viper Install on an S - PICS...

Looks neat. Did you fashion some kind of scoop to draw the air in under the vent in front of the windshield ? I know the wiper rack runs through that area & was wondering if anyone has fabricated one yet. Did you go from a stock intake to this? Let us know your impressions of any power differences

I urchased this from Diamond as a sort of demo unit. They are going to fabricate Carbon Fiber scoops to draw more air in. This is a direct upgrade from stock, the first intake on this car. The sound it makes at full throttle is awesome. It sounds likea jet engine taking ioff. It feels like the engine revs a lot smoother too. I can notice a slight power increase too...

With that design, does it sorta sound like a vacuum cleaner? I wonder if that size intake tube is too restrictive- if there is enough air flowing and not getting bottle necked. Maybe the driver's vent tot he backwall could get a modified cover with a raised scoop that rises above the surface of the bonnet. This would catch a little air off the bonnet and route it to the backwall vent on the driver's side and down into the air intake tube. Doesn't have to be big just a little above the bonnet level to catch air. The plastic vent can come out and be modified. I'm sure this is not legal for racing but might look good as a custom mod. Maybe do it all in carbon fiber!
Otherwise nice closed cold air intake system for the MCS in the making. Looks good- do it in colors
thanks for the pictures. Maybe do the next set in natural light (vs Moonlight?)
I'm just glad to have any pictures and I have a vivid imagination so no problem for me.

Since you are selling "performance" products, it may be a good idea to verify that they actually improve performance, rather than possibly making it worse. I can tell you from experience that the Pipercross Viper definitely filters worse than stock. If you remove the foam insert from the housing and hold it up to light, you can see right through it.
I might be able to get it on the dyno down at Helix on the 15th. I don't really feel like spending $75 dollars just for the intake dyno though...we will see what happens.

Does the Viper's carbon-fiber or plastic (whatever it is) covering help block the heat out better? I hope so, because my Pipercross with just the aluminum heat reflector heats up like hell. Before I insulated the heat relector, if I touched the aluminum on the actual filter part after a long drive it burned my hands. I'm sure it was doing a nice job of heating up the air coming in too. Thank God for electronic knock sensors!

I would think that style would be limiting the amount of air the engine is getting. From the picture, it looks like all of the air is coming from the vent in front of the driver and going into the end of the filter as opposed to having a K&N style cone that pulls air in from all the way around the filter.
Someone help me understand how this more "restrictive" style is better.

I don't know for sure, but I would think that the S might have different air requirements being that it is supercharged just as supercharged and normally aspirated cars have different back pressure requirements for exhausts. They are two very different cars.
I'd still like to hear a performance reason for that setup. I'm going to see Randy in Atlanta on Saturday to have a pulley installed. I'm going to ask him.
The more I think about it the more it makes less and less sense for an S.
