Drivetrain Tranny Fluid
Tranny Fluid
Ok, I have an 03 MCS, 6 speed, what type of fluid would I need. I know Royal Purple Majestic (think thats right) has tranny fluid, but was also looking at Amsoil. What type do I need, and what are your experiences with various brands? Thank you all.
MTF-94, 75W80 is the stock stuff. I went with stock, as no other brand makes 75W80 specifically. Considering it flows within the range 10W-30 motor oil flows, any transmission fluid in the same range should be appropriate.

Most of the aftermarket brands will get you close, but like I said, MINI is 75W80. Also if you have an LSD and are going aftermarket, make sure you're using the correct fluid.
Again, the stock stuff is great and has everything you need. Changed mine around a month ago (@ 45k miles), smoother shifting since.

REDLINE MTL.
This 70W80 GL-4 Gear Oil (SAE 5W30/10W30 engine oil viscosity) is designed for use in manual transmissions and transaxles. Provides excellent protection of gears and synchronizers and its balanced slipperiness provides a perfect coefficient of friction, allowing easier shifting. Popular in many BMW transmissions and in most Honda and Acura transaxle applications.
My personal preference.
Be sure you are using a GL-4 gear oil, and not a GL-5. The additive pack in the GL-5 oil can corrode certain types of Synchro's in GL-4 transmissions.

You'll need 2 quarts, undo the fill plug before the drain plug, use tubing from above to fill.
I bought Redline MTL from a local speed shop and I'm waiting for the 40k mark to change it. I want my intervals to be even.

Does anyone have experience with both MTL and MT 90? I currently have MTL in and when cold, it seems a little reluctant in the 1-2 shift. I'm not sure if it's the thin viscosity or just the syncros aging a little. It shifts alright when warmed up.
Try putting in new MTL and see if it helps.
