DME Reflash

Hey guys,

Is the result of the 163-170bhp difference from the 02-04 to 05-06 model years a result of the ECU parameters, or a combination of factors (I have read something along the lines of the exhausts being slightly different as well)? As far as I have read, timing is slightly advanced.

On the topic, anyone know of an OBDII tool to measure timing advance (paging Tuls?)?

Answered second part to question: SG II will show timing advance.

Now just for the DME reflash question.

i was under the impression that the exhaust were exactly the same. Only the supercharger had the JCW teflon coating that the earlier S's didn't have

There is a minor difference in JCW exhausts. The difference is between factory versus dealer installed kits. The dealer installed kits have the pipe that runs from the cat back to the mufflers as a separate piece for easier fitting. The factory kit was all one piece. Component-wise they are identical though.

Solid on that...so it is indeed the DME providing the difference? My only other information about this is the obvious fact that late cars burble, early cars don't; a difference in fuel delivery most definitely.

DME is BMW's ECU. I am separating it from the OBC (On Board Computer) that displays the dash functions.

DME: Controls engine
OBC: Controls everything else

If you go the dealer and say "Hey, I'd like my computer reset," there's a good chance they just reset the OBC and not the DME. Resetting the DME allows your car to re-learn your driving habits; updating it provides it with new fuels maps, etc. It is what controls the car, for all practical purposes.

Odd, because to the best of my knowledge mine does not (03/04 non-JCW). Friends following me have not heard it, and neither have I with the windows down. Car sounds more like a 911 Turbo on accel/decel...whooshing and a lot of air, rather than the rally style pops.

I'd prefer the latter. =P
