Downpipe red-hot. Weak spot?

I went out this mild-weathered evening (42ºF) to test my powerband before I get the pulley installed (it's in the mail ), so that I can judge the power difference (to go along with the dyno they do for free).

I was trying to pinpoint where my "perfect" launch RPM range was, and when to shift would be. I realized that 2700RPM is the "perfect" launch point for my MCS w/ custom intake. Took it thru 3rd gear each time. Ran about six times.

On the last run, I decided to check my engine to check for heat. The downpipe (at least I think) was glowing red. Not extremely, but it was noticeable.

So my question is:
What is the stock diameter of the downpipe?
And what are the best mods to take care of this?

Downpipe? Do you have a turbo? That is the term used to describe the pipe going from the turbo down to the cat.
If you're talking about the exhaust manifold (four tubes coming off the head that combine before the cat), that's usually referred to as a header.
I've heard of turbos/downpipes glowing after hard runs, but not sure if regular headers will do this normally with a supercharger.

Too many 2,700 rpm launches and a red-hot header will be the least of your concerns.

If you really want, you could get a ceramic coating put on.

Its perfectly normal when you drive your car hard. Look at them on the dyno. You will be amazed.

Look at what on the dyno?

And before, I've had it put off smoke. I assume that's no good. And yes, headers. Sorry. Haha.

So it's not a problem? Would adding a hi-flow cat or full set of headers/cat/exhaust fix it? Or do we already have hi-flow cats?

The Clutch is not held in. It goes from full-in clutch to full-out. There is no die-off when the clutch is released, which was the entire point of practicing my launch.

If anything, I would think the 2700RPM is only bad for fuel economy and barely tires (as they chirp a little bit at launch).

Did someone say glowing headers?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Q-cbfa62wXo

Yes, your header will get red-hot and its quite normal. It was even more noticable after I got my aftermarket header. Next time you drive hard open the hood and look down at them. It has nothing to do with the cat.

Huh. Well that puts my mind at ease quite a bit. =]

I guess I'll start worrying if my intake gets red hot. Haha.

I love that video. Ya, its normal, and theres no way to fix it. I don;t see why you would have a problem with it... I'm trying to get more flames to shoot out my exhaust pipe at this point.... I guess I have the opposite of what the OP wants....

I would like flames like that engine as well. There is some dangerous sounding kit that ignites fuel at the end of your exhaust to shoot fire, found here...

1nf3rno, how big are your flames? Any video of that?

IMO, thoes kits are stupid. If you can;t do it naturally (I.E. flames come from the engine without any assistance) there is no point. I have a video of it, but the camera sucks and its hard to see.

Look around the 30sec mark. You will see a flash. In reality, it was a foot long flame which ballooned out.

Ya, i already see flames. I want to see more. I already have a custom straight pipe exhaust, test pipe and header. The next step is a tune thats slightly rich for my 100 shot of N20 and after that a head and cam.... Right now, I get soem nice popping and flames though.

This is for my Turbo s2000, but the same principles apply. You shoot flames when there is unburnt gas in the exhaust system. This happens usually when you hit redline and the ecu is tuned to cut ignition before fuel, there is a large amount of unburnt fuel that flies through the exhaust system and as soon as it hits oxygen it ignites and produces a nice flame! Also it can happen when you quickly rev-match a gear etc...
This was when my car was supercharged
