Drivetrain Short Shifters
Guess you beat me to it.
To the person asking the question and to reafirm the answer, no you don't have to have their well cover. However, since their adjustable shift *** is right there at the bottom of the rod shifter for you to adjust it would make it sooooo much more easier if you did't have it coverd with the leather booth cover.
I decided to go with the well cover as well and it looks 100 times better and gives it that race look that I love. It als allows you to adjust the SS WITH MUCH EASE without having to deal with the booth cover.
Let me know and I will take a picture of mine and have it posted here if you like. It looks fantastic.

I'm sure there are multiple products that are excellent in quality and performance. I personally went with Craven Speed SSK, and I like it alot. No, you don't have to use their shift well cover. I kept my custom RedLine shift boot, and it works perfectly with my Whalen shift **** too.

I just installed the Helix SS kit for $40 bucks the one that slips over the end of the OEM like a condom. This thing rocks I love it!!! I can't believe it was only $40 but it is a very simple idea. It doesn't lower the shifter but I didn't want it lower anyways. The throw is much shorter and the a lot tighter.
I guess you don't always have to spend lots of money to get what you want.

Ok call ME stupid, but unless there is some new tool/fool on the market the exhaust, heat shield and box bottom HAVE to come out. There is NO way to do this otherwise. The cables simply can't be undone. The shifter box is bolted in from the bottom of the car, not the top.
Shameless plug for the ALTA, it too can be adjusted at anytime without removal of anything other than a simple pull up on the boot, made from hardened steel and also quick poke (which I seldoom do) do a quick search on the origin of this style of adjustable shifter for the MINI and you will see to whom the crown goes. Choose a company that has loyally supported this community, with tech support etc. Again my two cents.
Otherwise, all of these will perform very similarly, and if you want REALLY low an adjustable is the way to go. Also note that ours (and others too) allow the stock know, our **** or the ever famous Whalen Shift Machine.
Good luck on your search. Let me know if I can ever help further!
