Short Shifters

Again I come to you all with a question. To those of you who have short shifters, Im wondering what your preference is. Im used to Hondas and there are a lot of options. I was partial to what was called a robo shifter which was highly adjustable in height, angle, etc. Since theres nothing like that available Im wondering what the best is. Im partial to Alta products, but thats only because I didnt know what I was doing when I arbitrarilly bought their CAI and oil catch can. I love them, I just want to know if their shifter is on par with other options.

Check out Craven's speed, it's adjustable ready with a *** that you can do sitting at the red light. The feel is very smooth and the height is almost as stock maybe a hair shorter. Definitely one of the better mods I've done.

Sorry to hijack your thread but...
I am looking to shorten the shifter height as much as possible while retaining my JCW ****. I thought the adjustable Alta would accomplish this ???
Any ideas ???

Check out Craven's speed,
Do you know if it's compatible with the standard ***** (do you have to buy one of theirs as pictured in the website?) and with the leather boot (do you have to buy the well plate as pictured in the website?)

Edit: just found the answer to my first question -- from their website:

The stock **** fits perfectly with the adapter available for Mini's built between 02 and 06.

Still wondering about the well plate. I realize that it makes adjustment harder to have the leather boot on there -- but can you, or do you have to have the well plate instead?

I'm sure there are multiple products that are excellent in quality and performance. I personally went with Craven Speed SSK, and I like it alot. No, you don't have to use their shift well cover. I kept my custom RedLine shift boot, and it works perfectly with my Whalen shift **** too.

What, exactly, does having a short shifter accomplish?

my guess is you wont need it. I actually don't think it would be harder to adjust either. the little plastic circle pops right off and you can adjust. from what I have seen atleast. I have the b&M and I really like it, the effort to put it into gears might turn some people off though

I'm sure the guys/gals that race, autox, and such can give you a more technical answer than I, LynnEl. But in basic lay terms...it reduces the shifting throw, meaning you don't have to move as far getting from gear to gear. For me, it was about comfort. I can shift faster and smoother...without feeling as though I'm stretching my shoulder out of socket. For those in competitive situations, it miliseconds worth of "time"...less distance for the shifter to move = faster shifts = faster times on the track.

Well...maybe someone can help you out with a better explanation...that's about as good as I can do, being a non-techie.

Well, things with a "lay" in it usually are helpful. Thanks, Tig. I am not into auto-x, so your explanation sounds good to me. I am more concerned with how sloppy the stock shifter is. Would a short shift, or anything, help with that?

If, by "sloppy", you mean the shifts are looser and not tight and controlled with the stock set-up, yes, that is a benefit of a SSK - at least from my experience with the Craven Speed. It's much tighter...there is no chance of me putting my MINI in reverse, instead of 1st (yes, I have done this ). There is no question of gear selection with a SSK...tighter, more controlled, shorter, and smoother. It's been a great mod for me personally.

the shortshifters are harder to put the car into the gear. its kinda of a stiffer feeling, so the sloppiness is gone. you KNOW when the car is in gear or not in gear. IT also helps in terms of the less amount of time you have your had on the shifter the more time it can be on the steering wheel.

Hmmmm. Sounds great, as, by sloppy, I don't mean so much going into a wrong gear, but that the shifter wobbles and wiggles (but it doesn't fall down) along the way. I may have to look into this raven thing.

Ya, there is that. But once the car's in the air...pulling the exhaust off is easy. Installation of the SSK isn't as hard as it sounds. But I understand your pause...it's not as easy as installing, say, a STB or CAI.

I'm not very adventurous with mods. The only mod's I'll do myself are ones I know can't affect performance. I considered plugging my ScanGauge into the OBDC an accomplishment.

Actually, those do affect performance. They make me sneeze, which makes my shifts less than admirable.

Sorry to be that vendor guy who bursts in on the thread, but with all the love in the air I couldn't miss this one.

I just wanted to say that the short shifter CAN be installed without and jack stands or exhaust removal. If you intend to keep "the dreaded box cover" on there is no reason to get under the car. You just unbolt the console, pull the stocker out and put the adjustabel shifter back in its' place.

This leaves you with a longer throw, but still a noticeable reduction, and therefore improvement in the precision of the throws.

just cut 3 to 3 1/2 in. off the shaft and stick a **** back on.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...11&ppuser=4821

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...12&ppuser=4821

this gives about 1 - 1 1/16 in. throw, less than 1/16 in. slop, and great mechanical feel. the difference in force is miniscule.

try it out before the mod by just grabbing the stock shaft way down near the cover for a few days. if you mod it and don't like it, you can just put in a new stock shaft.
