WHY B&M SHORT SHIFTERS SUCK!

You have to cut the rubber ***** off your original shifter housing gasket, then you have to bend your heat shields to fit over the new larger heavier metal B&M dust cover, then you have to punch new holes in your heat shields so that the screws will line back up. After all of that...you get a shofter shifter that's really hard to shift, not much shorter at all, and that has this large metal dust cover that vibrates like CRAZY against your exhaust resonator. I reallly disklike B&M. This is the second time they have sold me a product that had a half-*** research and development effort behind it. I'm going back to stock by the way.

That looks nothing like my B&M shortshifter.

Mine has a bit of a bend in it.

Its has metal bushings to replace the rubber ones. Those rubber ones just come out. I still have them in a bag with my original sifter.

No metal shift cover. It fits within the plastic OEM one, so I didnt have to bend anything.

Mine is a little more difficult to shift, but not my much. Its much shorter and I no longer miss gears in the heat of the moment.

Maybe they have changed it, but I only fitted mine 6 months ago and it came direct from the UK Distributors, Eibach.

I am very happy with mine, but it looks nothing like your kit. Be interresting ot know what they have to say about it, and why it may have changed. I guess yours could have been an older style one, but thats just a guess.

I also don't recognize this as the typical B&M shifter. Sure thats what you have? Looks like one of those eBay things maybe.

I actually bought one of those "eBay things" for 29.95, before I knew better. Another MINI friend and I had an afternoon to kill so we dropped the thing in my car just for a laugh, and guess what....... it rocks!! I've had it in the car for almost a year now and even Chad at Detroit Tuned loves the feel of it. It's a B&M knockoff and judging by the COOPT Up's report, it sounds like it's better than the real thing. Anyway, I love it.

I think some of you are confused. There was a change to the B&M design corresponding to the change in shifter housing designs sometime in 2004.

That shifter looks identical to the one put in my 05. It comes with the big aluminum bushings, the new dust cover, and a straight shaft.

That said I don't have any of the issues you are having with the kit. Mines nice and smooth (although it is stiffer, which is to be expected). I don't have any rattle. I didn't have to punch any holes in the heat shield.

x2

Same kit I put into a late model '04 and we had no issues with fitment or operations.

My '03 kit is the old kit with the short bushings, it won't work on the newer models.

way to make yourself look like a fool.

before posting your obvious misinformation, try to research a little so you are at least up to date prior to attempting to make people feel silly.

2 different shifter builds in the cooper line up.

=

2 different shifter designs.

chill out

dude, chill out. it's for a 2006 mcs. i know what i bought. if you want to start a flame, go to a honda / acura forum. why don't you do yourself a favor and delete your post so you don't keep looking like an ***.

anyway, i'm running a JCW exhaust which is why it's hitting. it also hits for people who are running milltek and a few other exhaust systems. b&m should take into account that peole who are installing a short shifter are probably doing other mods like installing an exhaust system...their excuse is that they designed it for a cooper s. come on guys!! do you really think all we're going to do is install a short shifter? it's like people who design intakes that hit front strut bars.

Likely mods or not, what do you expect them to design for? Obviously, they are going to design for the stock vehicle. They can't guess what you are going to put in your car.

my vehicle is actually stock. i purchased it with the jcw kit off the dealer's lot? no mention anywhere that it wouldn't fit a jcw or any other exhaust for that matter. atleast give people a heads up. i've done searches and i'm definitely not the only one with this problem. some people had to cut and relocate their resonators to accomodate the shifter.

My B&M shifter is perfect! No problems on the install and none since it was installed 2 years ago when it was released. There are 2 different versions. I went with the B&M because I want a full replacement and not a knuckle add-on.

yeah, i think it's just the later years, when they changed the design that you needed that larger metal cover that they supplied. trying to figure a way around it. either removing it and just using the heat shield to protect the shifter from debris, or adding spacers for the exhaust hanger so it hangs lower and won't touch the cover.

Obehave's post was unnecessarily antagonistic. We shouldn't have to expect that kind of thing on NAM, where people should be encouraged to express their questions and concerns.

x2. especially from someone that's been here for so long. i used to think it was the noobs wrecking the vibe but it's the ones that have been around for a while too. Where does obehave get off? There are more than a few of the old timers that have this attitude.

So will a B&M hit a Milltek cat back? I plan on installing the B&M when I install my Milltek so if anyone knows if I have to pop some spacers on the hangers or modify in another way I'd like to know now so I can get it all done in one shot.

Thanks.

Yeah, seriously. I was a bit surprised. Most Mini owners are cool, down to earth people, that will try and give you advice before biting your head off. And that photo I posted was from piloracing.com, not ebay.

Yeah, it's a serious install and it will hit your Milltek. There's an old post about it on NAM somewhere that I just came across. The guy added 1" spacers to the exhaust hanger. I have to fix mine quick before I damage the resonator from the constant virbration. Last thing I want is to have to replace a JCW exhaust. That would be pricey. I wanted to put it back to stock, but Mini wants to charge $75 bucks for a new heat shield that had to be modified to fit the B&M metal cover, and like $50 for that rubber gasket that B&M tells you to cut, so i'm trying to figure a way I can just keep the shifter, because the cost to replace those parts cost more than the shifter.

+4 I have a Miltek and don't have any problems. COOPT UP, were you looking for a shorter throw and shorter shifter or just a shorter throw?

B & M and Helix are the only ones I know of that just have a shorter throw.

BTW I am using the newer model

I would suspect so. I know that the Alta short shift kit in my car rattles (more of a squeak or whistle actually) against my Milltek. It is beyond annoying. (Although apparently not annoying enough for me to fix it )
