Throttle Response (in neutral)

In neutral, the MCS engine takes forever to spool up, and just as long to slow down when you take your foot off the pedal. You can't 'blip' the engine. This is significanly slowing the upshift time as well as the double-clutch downshift. This was a big problem as well on the Classic Mini which could be be resolved by removing the oil dampeners on the the SU side-draft carbs.

Any idea how to resolve it on the modern SC engine?

Lighten the flywheel and clutch, also the crank pully. This will make the biggest difference unless you really get into it, like get rid of the "drive by wire" throttle.

The sluggish no load throttle response on the 1st gen MCS is much worse than flywheel/clutch weight would account for unless the assembly is made of solid lead. I just figured it was either the drive by wire issue or by-pass valve set up to improve driveability for the more typical and less precise shifting drivers.

I also agree that it's mostly tuning. While flywheel/crank pulley weight does add a little time, the lag is huge. I made a thread not too long ago about boost gauge readings and throttle response. The boost gauge actually goes up and down perfectly with the pedal...no lag. This means the lag is in fuel delivery. The stock tune has to comply with emissions etc and one way they do this is to hold the rpm's a little after you let off (which makes fast shifting nearly impossible). The lag in tip-in response is most likely an emissions related feature as well.

Does this "spooling" seem better?

onasled- That looks awsome. Please keep us infomed with all your future projects/tunning. Would love to find out what your car does and how well it kicks some behind of some of the faster production cars.

After the LDG Tuning Event in Miami, several felt that the throttle response had improved. Please report back after you visit John.

That's the key I believe...I've done everything else but just can't get that ultra fast bark that yours puts out...

Yeah, but even with the 10.5 and a decent clutch you have to admit the repsonse is still an order of magnitude better then stock. I have no real complaints about mine. Save for that issue of when running AC for long time on a hot day after lifting throttle from over 4k rpm and in neutral the Mini has a tendancey to stall.

With 10lb FW, mine tends to stall when coming to a stop when the air is on...solution, don't drive on hot days...it sucks anyway...

Mine only does that when it's EXTREMELY hot, like 102-108F. and its always like 80-90% humidity. I cant wait for the fall and winter when I make some good power.
