Drivetrain (Cooper S) MINI Cooper S (R53) intakes, exhausts, pulleys, headers, throttle bodies, and any other modifications to the Cooper S drivetrain.

Drivetrain Hey jlm. Any plans of making a larger diameter crank pulley?

no you wouldn't. The crank pulley is a vibration damper...you want to leave that stock. I wouldn't trust replacing it. Do the supercharger pulley and lighten the flywheel...don't touch the crank pulley.

I totally agree, unless somone is going to come out with a larger diameter harmonic balancer this is out.

Aren't there at least a few companies who have already done this (or are planning to)? I agree, it sounds like a bad idea, but maybe just a small 5-10% enlargement might be alright ...possibly with a stock or even lowered rev limiter to prevent other components from going over design specs? I suppose by lowering the rev limiter you'd loose some potential power, but you still probably get a net.

*disclaimer* I know nothing about the internals and workings of an engine!

not sure what the intention is, but, if I was going to re-engineer the pulley system, I would want the alternator, AC pump, power steering to all rotate slower, the blower to rotate faster. Also you want the pulleys to not get too small as that is hard on the belt. So...15% larger crank pulley, stock size blower pulley gets more boost, then you need 30% larger alt, AC pump pulleys to compensate for the faster belt travel and achieve slower than stock rotation to reduce power drag. a lot of trouble.

jlm, wouldn't you only need to ensure that the different components (alternator, AC pump, power steering) didn't exceed the equivalent of stock redline? I also assume that like the S/C, the components can individually be spun a bit faster than they are at stock redline. Wouldn't that allow you to do a small increase in pulley diamater? I don't know if, say a 5% increase would improve performance by much, but i doubt it would cause many problems...Especially since almost every ECU out there ups the factory redline (meaning the components are already spinning faster than originially intended by MINI).

i was intending to reduce the speed of the stock components...old hotrodding trick.

i personally dont think you couls oversize the crank pulley as it would hit the tensioner not enought room idea great real world not possible

I was told that 15% is pretty safe, but also as high as you want to go. Some are doing a 17% pulley, but that's asking for trouble. If you increase the diam of the crank pulley, I think it will push it beyond reliablity.
